Will you ever delete my site?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am planning to move to a new theme. Can’t decide whether to create a new site, or to export and import, or just ‘adopt’ the new theme. Q1: If I adopt the new theme, is there any going back? Q2: If I create a new site and re-direct people from my old to my new, will the old one ever get removed by WordPress?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

A1. You can change themes and change back (if you remember the name of your previous theme…It’s amazing how many people don’t!) but you may have to tweak a few menu/widget settings as not all themes have the same layout (Duh! Obviously. Why else would people change).

A2. There is no time limit to how long a WordPress.com site will stay on the Interweb. It should stay there until the Interweb ends or the Martians invade whichever is soonest.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

If I want to make a copy of my site to try on the new theme, because I don’t the hassle of the tweaking, is export/import the only way to do this?

    Thanks.

Sometimes it’s easiest to start another site just to use as a test bed so you don’t disturb your live site. The test site can be marked private and then you can import content from your main site and experiment all you want.

Yes, exactly. That was my thinking, and what I am doing at the moment. But just wondered if Export / Import was the only mechanism to do this, or whether there was a ‘Copy my site’ button that I hadn’t spotted yet.

We don’t have a site cloner function at the moment – cool idea, though. :) Right now, theme settings/widgets/menus would need to be copied manually.

Great advice here. Just wanted to mention that staff can always check what your previous theme was, so don’t worry if you forget. :) To expand on what themagicrobot said, here are some things to watch out for when switching themes:

Not unless it violates our terms of service. :)
