Windows Live Writer fails to download blog theme template correctly

This is applicable to both of my blogs. For years I have used WLW and if I changed my blog theme WLW was able to correctly download a new theme template. But not any more.

Last week I decided to give Hemmingway Rewritten a try. I was happy with the theme so decided to update the WLW theme template which is downloaded from WordPress. For whatever reason it didn’t work and I’m not seeing the theme format correctly in WLW. During testing I switched my theme back to Parament, which I’ve been using for sometime and told WLW to update the theme again. Now I am unable to download the theme template for Parament which previously worked fine in WLW.

    A look at the WLW log file reports that WLW is unable to download various items with line of comments like this;

    WindowsLiveWriter,1.4484,None,00092,31-Mar-2014 16:30:34.763,”Didn’t download file: http://s0.wp.com/wp-content/themes/pub/parament/images/diagonal-stripes-010.png

Some help with this would be appreciated but I suspect this is one for the support staff. I can provide the full log file if required

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Looks like this one is too hard for support….

Another Volunteer may have an answer for you but I am sorry because I do not have one. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks for flagging it. As I said I suspect this one will be only something support might be able to resolve. When you see the WLW Log File it’s obvious that WLW is not able to download elements of the theme, mainly graphic elements. I’ve already subscribed to this thread and I don’t mind waiting if it can be resolved.

This sounds like an issue with Windows Live Writer not being able to fully implement one of our themes, rather than an issue with WordPress.com itself. While we can offer tips on how to use WLW with WordPress.com, we cannot provide support for the software itself.

We have a general support document on WLW here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/windows-live-writer/

For further assistance with this, you might try the WLW support forums:

WLW was able to implement Parament before I tried switching to Hemmingway Revisited, which is when it started to have problems. In all the years I have used WLW I have been able to switch themes in WP and then update the theme template in WLW quite sucessfully.

Surely if WLW was able to work with Parament before switching to Hemmingway Revisited it should be able to work with it again?

I would think so too, but again this appears to be an issue with WLW rather than WordPress.com. I’d encourage you to check with the WLW support forums for further assistance.

    OK Thanks for your help

Well I’ve been on the Microsoft support forum, what a dead hole that is. Lots of people asking questions but nobody providing answers.

Are you sure the problem is not with WP as the log file suggests WLW is not able to download files from the WP server. Now as it worked perfectly ok before, are you sure it’s got nothing to do with the beta?

I resurrected my old blog on Blogger to test if WLW could download a template correctly. Worked perfectly fine.

So I am more than ever convinced the problem lies within WordPress. Are support staff going to ignore this?

While I would like to assist you, Windows Live Writer is not our product, and it is beyond the scope of WordPress.com support to provide support for commercial third-party software.

You might try uninstalling WLW and reinstalling it to see if that makes a difference for you. Beyond that, I’m afraid I will have to once again redirect you to Microsoft support.

It’s no matter now. I’m migrating over to Blogger. WLW works quite happily with their themes.
