Windows Live Writer unable to download theme

  I’ve used WLW successfully without a hitch for 2 years, then had to get a new laptop. I downloaded it yesterday and everything went fine except it was unable to download my blog theme. I searched and found a couple of similar posts but not quite the same (my blog is set on UTF-8, and has no static page).

  On WLW, I tried: Blogs > Edit Blog Settings > Editing > Refresh Theme; but this was the result:

  “Unable to download theme
  The theme used for editing your blog posts could not be downloaded.
  You will be able to post to this blog, but the editor will not use your blog’s theme.”

  How can I get WLW to download my theme? It still functions, but not nearly as well as it used to before I got my new laptop. Thank you!

  Here’s a little trick I do with WLW to get the theme to download. First you will need to post something to your blog like a test post then wait 30seconds then go back into the settings to download the theme and by now the theme should download without out a hitch. If it fails to download repeat the steps again I usually don’t have to try more the two times with the steps above.

  WLW automatically creates a test post in the process, but it still didnt work. I went ahead and created a post, but it still didn;t work after that either. I tried closing down WLW & IE8, then opening WLW and Refreshing again…still no go. I read your post and thought, well, it’s already been done but what the heck…so I opend WLW and just went straight to the settings and clicked the Refresh button again (for about the 10th time), and it worked this time!

  Things just keep getting curiouser and curiouser.

  I have run into this too. It started happening after I upgraded from IE7 to IE8. Many attempts including t3ck’s suggestion, still WLW is unable to download theme. Might try downgrading to IE7 to see if that resolves the issue.
