With Domain mapping do all my posts get new permalinks and do I keep my old ones

    Hello,

I currently own CurtFletcher.com and have the domain forwarded to curtfletcher.wordpress.com. I am considering doing the domain mapping which I think I understand the process fine. What I am wondering is when it is done do any of my past posts disappear when the domain is mapped with the permalinks, etc? Would I have 2 links for each post? Finally, if I decided to go back to just the curtfletcher.wordpress.com would all of the old domain mapped links still work or would they die?

Thank you very much in advance,
    Curt

No, anything you upload keeps the yourblog.wordpress.com permalinks.

And all of your posts will still be there. Posts and post permalinks will just be modified for display in the browser to reflect the mapped URL.

Let me ask the question this way. If I sent out links to different posts the way it is now. Did the domain mapping and sent out links to different people. If I then dropped the domain mapping would all of the links I have ever sent out still work? Are you saying that whether or not I have domain mapping the permalinks are exactly the same? Sorry if I am showing my cluelessness!

FYI – it may look like your permalinks have changed to the mapped domain – even in the edit post window – but the old links still do work. (I checked one of my old posts – from way before I had domain mapping – just to be sure.)

Definitely the uploaded stuff (images, etc) keeps the permalinks to wp.com. (One of my pet peeves, BTW. Seems to me if they can mask the post permalinks they should be able to mask the image permalinks.)

Curt – I’m not sure what would happen if you stopped the domain mapping. I do know that the links would revert. So it seems logical to me that the mapped domain links would not work.

That is what I was wondering. Even though I probably wouldn’t it is always good to check on these things. Do you know if I leave it like it is, my domain forwarding to curtfletcher.wordpress.com, am I giving up the chance of ever getting real traffic because it really won’t be as visible in search engines, etc. I like your site by the way Vivian!

I wouldn’t do redirection. If you search the forums, you’ll find that folks run into problems. For $10 a year, domain mapping is worth it.

But I also would never map my blog to a top-level domain, at least not here. There are too many drawbacks, IMHO. (For example, you can’t do (email visible only to moderators and staff) once you map the top-level domain.) I always recommend mapping a subdomain. That way, control of the domain stays with you.

And thanks for your kind words on my site. I’m about to re-do it again (since I’ve learned a little bit more about CSS ;)

Vivian, in your case do you mean the fact that you are using Blog.VivianPaige.com and not VivianPaige.com? Last question, I really appreciate the info. When you say redirection this is the same as forwarding, right? I thought it was the easiest thing because I could just tell friends to go to my name.com and not worry about anything technical, it just gets people to my wordpress.com blog page.

Yes, that’s what I mean. blog.vivianpaige.com is a subdomain (actually, so is curtfletcher.wordpress.com)

And yes, AFAIK, redirection and forwarding are the same. But do a forum search on it because I recall staff talking about the issues with it.

Yes, it takes a while to get folks to get used to blog.yourdomain.com but I think it’s worth it.

Hi…I was planning to do the domain mapping to 30fpsdigitalvideo.wordpress.com. I own a domain and have a working site ….www.30-fps.com. I just got confused with the subdomain that Vivian was suggesting. You see I have old files uploaded in http://www.30-fps.com and would still like to view the old files when I do the domain mapping. So I thought I had to make a sub-domain so people can view my old files. If you don’t suggest to do the domain mapping at the top level which is http://www.30-fps.com and do it at the sub-domain like blog.30-fps.com, how would I direct people to blog.30-fps.com? Will I redirect http://www.30-fps.com to blog.30-fps.com? Sorry, I’m a little new at this…
