Hi, I have tried to use the Wix importer to build my new site, but it always halts with this error message: 504 status code for ‘POST /sites/xyztyx/site-importer/import-site?engine=wix’
I was hoping to import the static page contents. Can you help me on this please?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hey there, would it be okay if we test this import on our side?

If so, can you share a link to your wix site and the site you’re trying to import into? We’ll see if we can find a solution.

Hi, my original site is https://www.ph21gallery.com/

the new site I am trying to import to is: ph21gallery.wordpress.com

Thank you for any tips or tricks to sort it out :)

  • Thanks! Just to check, I understand that you use Wix to build the site; do I understand correctly that your domain name points to Wix using their IP address (A record)? Normally I’m not sure this should have any effect, but it’s worth checking.

thank you for looking into this. I am using a third party domain provider, so the domain points to the Wix site but is not managed by Wix.

  • Thanks. We’re trying to suss out why it won’t import: I’ve confirmed the importer is working with another site, but for some reason yours isn’t working. I’m not sure if it’s the custom domain.

Would you be willing to make a copy of the site with an non-custom domain, and then import that, just to confirm whether the custom domain is the cause?

Thanks for the tip – https://ph21gallery.wixsite.com/website

Unfortunately, same problem persists, so I reckon, it is not the domain that causes the issue. :(

  • Hello there,

Thank you for that additional information – to confirm, this happens with the default Wix address?

    Many thanks.

Hi, yes, the problem persist with the duplicated site as well (that one does not have any domain redirects or any other bells and whistles, just a simple duplication on the platform): the importer starts, shows me a snapshot of the site, I click on the confirmation, it starts working and in 10-20 seconds the 504 error pops up.

  • Got it.

What is the URL of that duplicated site? Many thanks in advance.

  • Just as an update from this side, we checked in with the team that handles Wix imports and it looks like it’s an issue specific to your particular site, as we haven’t been able to duplicate the error with any other imports from them. We can’t see error details from our side to pinpoint the issue either.

We thought maybe it was something odd in the custom domain setup, so thanks for eliminating that possibility. It could be one of the features on the site that’s getting hung up, or maybe something as trivial as how you wrote your email address with an [at] in it, or perhaps it’s timing out because there are so many images.

I can think of a half dozen tests you could try along those lines to suss this out, but depending on how much content you have, that may take more time than just creating each page here using patterns or galleries with the same “slugs” (like urban-23), then setting up the menu once more to tie it all together.

If you’d like to try more test suggestions, let us know; we’ll send them over. Or if you’d like to just start importing “manually,” we have a guide here and would be happy to assist as needed.
