wix or wordpress?

I’ve acquired a domain name for my blog but I’m not sure whether to use WordPress or Wix to construct the site.
I don’t want to commit to moving the domain to WordPress without mocking-up the site and getting an idea of how easy or otherwise it is to maintain it. I’ve done this with Wix but don’t want to commit to them because I don’t think I need al the bells and whistles they’re keen on me using.
Is there a way I can (like Wix) construct the site and get an idea of how to use WordPress without committing to using it (or paying for it!)? -
There is some error with this thread, my post does not appear and reposting causes error “Duplicate”. Other browsers do not show my reply, even after one hour. Cleaning cache and cookies does not help either… Adding Staff to check.
