WIX User looking to change.

It seems I can not see Anything of how wordpress works without purchasing a plan. I wish to make a custom site, and your editing tools seem devoted only to templates. I have been unable to place custom images and move them. I understand upgrading, but I don’t wish to spend $300 just to see how the interface works. Also I don’t wish to attach a web address I already own yet. I wish to build my site first. What gives. I am leaving WIX because of bad customer support. It appears I must pay for outside support or weave my way through the endless blogs and support forums to get a simple answer.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there,
Wordpress.COM is a multi user blogging platform with off the shelf themes. We wordpress.com bloggers do not have access to the template files underlying our themes on wordpress.COM hosted blogs and cannot edit them. This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme use the same underlying template found on the live demo site for each theme.Does Customize let me edit HTML?
No. Customize allows you to edit fonts, colors, and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup or PHP code. If you require this functionality, please consider moving your blog to a web host that supports theme code modifications. You can read more about why here http://support.wordpress.com/code/, and find a suitable host here http://get.wp.com/hosting/.
Custom design – Frequently Asked Questions http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questionsSee here for details on purchasing an annually renewable upgrade https://wordpress.com/pricing/ that contains a custom design upgrade required for CSS editing:

Note 2: You can also post there prior to purchasing an upgrade to get an answer to whether or not what you want to do can be accomplished via CSS editing.

I have been unable to place custom images and move them.
Have you consulted the detailed theme description page at this link? http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/
Have you consulted the support docs at https://en.support.wordpress.com/ such as this one https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/?

Also I don’t wish to attach a web address I already own yet. I wish to build my site first.
You can build your site first Build Your Website in Five Steps https://en.support.wordpress.com/five-step-website-setup/ and purchase a plan to map to an existing domain at any time.
re: purchasing upgrades

WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and purchase upgrades at > Dashboard> Store > My Upgrades

https://en.support.wordpress.com/billing-history/Your only options for payment are found here Payment Methods http://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/
WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers. The refund period for Domain Registrations and Renewals is 48 hours.
Note: It takes from 1 – 2 weeks for the refund to be received.
You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard, cancel any upgrades, claim a refund for any qualified upgrades, and disable auto-renew. It appears I must pay for outside support or weave my way through the endless blogs and support forums to get a simple answer.
If you cannot succeed using the written instructions I provided links to above, the fast way to get answers to questions is to post them here in a support forum thread. There are Volunteers like me who have been here for 10 years and can answer them when relevant details are provided, or direct them to Staff when required.
All support docs are at https://en.support.wordpress.com/
See: Getting WordPress.com Support https://en.support.wordpress.com/help-support-options/
There is no phone support. Those who have a paid upgrade for a wordpress.COM site can use the “Contact Support” form, http://support.wordpress.com/contact/
The best WordPress.COM contact form to use now for Staff assistance is:
http://wordpress.com/help/contactLive chat will be available there only if we have Happiness Engineers available to chat. When they are not available using that link results in posting to this peer support forum. https://en.support.wordpress.com/live-chat/
re: direct email support
Also note, that you can email WordPress.COM Staff at: -
So you are saying even if I purchase the top upgrade customization is still limited to the templates? I can not scale or move images without going into HTML or CSS? Please see my WIX site at http://www.getrichgraphics.com This is what I’m looking to recreate with WordPress.

Every theme has a detailed theme description page like this one at https://wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/ That’s where set up instructions for it are found. The live demo site is at https://twentyfourteendemo.wordpress.com/

A blog is a website. The difference between blog and website is simply structure and semantics.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one-way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds, and as others do not backlink to pages, it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

I understand the difference between Blog and Static Site. I do not wish or need for people to post. So far you have not really addressed any of my questions, only referred me to other forums. I understand you are a volunteer, I have been to everything you have posted and not one of my questions have been addressed in them. I could spend a thousand years looking and EVERY forum just sends me to another till I’m back where I started. It seems wordpress support is just as bad as WIX, and it is not as customizable. I guess I need to use Dreamweaver.

I guess my biggest issue is there is no tool bar, and even paid plans are very constrictive on what can be done.

Indeed. Alternatively, you can hire a web host and then set up your own wordpress.ORG software install. Please see Moving to Self-Hosted WordPress https://move.wordpress.com
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
