Wix vs WordPress for Start-up

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello there, I’m hoping to get insight why a small biz should choose wordpress over wix to build website? I have heard good things about both. WordPress has more flexibility but Wix makes it very easy to put a website together. I dont have in background in code and prefer the user friendliness of Wix but I’m concerned I may not have flexibility in future as biz grows. Is someone able to guide me the pros of wordpress over another platform like WIx? Do I need coding for wordpress? What is the easiest way to get started in wordpress? Also is support handled by forums? no dial in number? correct? looking for guidance and thank you

  • Hi –

These are all great questions and I’ll be happy to answer them.

To begin, there are 2 different versions of WordPress. What we do here at WordPress.com is different from using the WordPress installation with a hosting provider. The differences are outlined in this guide:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Based on your knowledge level I believe WordPress.com to be the better fit. We manage the nitty gritty behind the scenes details that it takes to keep a website up and running. Whereas with a self hosted WordPress site you would be responsible for those details.

Do I need coding for wordpress?

    No you don’t!

What is the easiest way to get started in wordpress?

It sounds like you plan to build a business website. We have a step-by-step guide to walk you through that process: https://en.support.wordpress.com/making-a-business-website/ There is also a learning tutorial available at learn.wordpress.com.

Also is support handled by forums? no dial in number?

All WordPress.com support is handled online. If you have a plan upgrade then you are given access to live chat and email support. Free accounts can find help in the forums. The plans are outlined at wordpress.com/pricing/

WordPress.com Reader is a great tool that helps others discover your site and content. It’s an easy way to connect to other businesses or have your clients follow your website. This is unique to WordPress.com.

You can have a fully functioning website for absolutely free on WordPress.com which can be key when just starting a new business. Support is always close by to help you along the way.
