Won't allow a space after a ) in a bullet list

  I have used WordPress for a decade now and have dozens of websites. But this is the first time I encountered this (that I can recall). I have a post with several multi-level bullet lists (actually numbered lists). I now am putting a list of all the links from the post near the bottom of the post kind of like a list of footnotes. That list at the bottom of the post is a numbered list … so my reference to it in the post itself needs to be a number. If the link is at the end of bullet line followed by a ) such as when the link is within parentheses … if I go back to edit that line it will NOT allow me to put a space after the ) but it will allow me to put a number after the ) and then I can insert a space between the ) and the number. Since I do want the number set off by a leading space that will work … but I am stumped as to what is happening that WordPress will not let me type a space at the end of a bullet line ending with a )

  The “read about it” inside the ( ) is a link. I wanted to add a 6 to the end of that bullet line with a preceding space but could not do it. The only way to type “space” 6 at the end was to type the 6 first, then insert a “space” before the 6
