Won't let me redirect?!

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a redirect set up, paid the $17AUD and now when I goto manage->domain->change primary->check box to my redirect site it gives me an error message saying “I need to upgrade to a paid plan in order to be able to make this your primary domain”. What is going on? It didn’t say anything about needing to be on a paid plan when I paid the $17?

Hi there, I’ve flagged this thread for Staff reply, but also see you have a forum thread about this at https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/redirect-from-wordpress-com-failing/ I’ve gone ahead and closed that thread so we can keep all support in one place. Thanks for your patience.

Ok, but they are different problems. Can I please the original problem here as well:

I set up a redirect from koreangrammardifferently.wordpress.com to koreangrammardifferently.com and afterwards I noticed several pages were running into 404 errors.

I tested by Googling something that would produce a search result going into my original webpage. Often on mobile it would get the error while on PC it seemed fine. After some brief testing I turned the redirect off because I was worried I would be turning users away.

The only thing I can think of is that Google search results on mobile use the AMP url, which may not be redirecting properly??

    *scared to try again*

The blog I need help with is koreangrammardifferently.wordpress.com.

  • It would be helpful to know which pages are being affected. Can you send a few examples?

Do you mind if I change the primary domain on the account from my end to test it?

    Hi Liz,

At the moment you won’t be able to test it because I switched off the redirect last night because I was scared it was breaking all my Google search results.

You can try to re-set up the redirect, you may get the error message as well.

  • The redirect should work fine. I’ve never had someone report this before, so I need to look at it closer as I don’t know off hand what would’ve caused it. Do you remember which pages were messed up?

  • Unknown's avatar

Are you able set up my redirect again? WordPress.com won’t let me anymore. I will be able to test it and if it is still breaking I can give you some specific examples.

  • Hmm, I see what you mean. Usually folks just leave the redirect on; apparently if you make the other name primary then try to change back, it thinks you’re trying to host the site here without a plan.

I’ve removed and re-added it for you, and I have confirmed it works.

Can you also send more details about what was 404ing for you? If I go to https://koreangrammardifferently.wordpress.com/2020/04/11/ranked-list-of-resources-for-beginner-french-learners/ for example, it brings up the post on the new site.

Supernovia, what you did appears to have worked. Unfortunately I think I’ve done something now that has completely confused wordpress.com.

I deleted the redirect which you set up for me and created a new redirect to “ahakorean.com”. It seems that this redirect however has not actually happened.

Updating status: seems like all the redirects when click on Google search results are failing on mobile devices.

  • Hi there,

Not being able to set the site redirect as primary on your site is a bug. I’ve reported it to our developers to look into. I’ll update you here once they have it fixed.

I deleted the redirect which you set up for me and created a new redirect to “ahakorean.com”. It seems that this redirect however has not actually happened.

So you want to redirect to this domain instead now, and not koreangrammardifferently.com which you had before? In that case we owe you a refund for the first redirect which you’ve cancelled, so please confirm.

Updating status: seems like all the redirects when click on Google search results are failing on mobile devices.

Okay, this is because Google search results on mobile specifically would be using the AMP links for your WordPress.com site, and those cannot be redirected with a Site Redirect upgrade. It can only redirect normal direct links to content on your WordPress.com site.

But Google will quickly realise that your WordPress.com address is being redirected, and should finish re-indexing your content within a few weeks, at which point your WordPress.com address should not appear in search results at all any more.

A site redirect upgrade is more useful in terms of redirecting people who click on existing links for your site that has been shared on Facebook, added by other people on their websites, etc. In terms of search engines it doesn’t really do much, as all a search engine will do if it sees a link being redirected is to remove that link from their index, so it’s not a long-term solution to make sure people can still find your site via online searches.

Thanks kokkieh. Yes please terminate the redirect to koreangrammardifferently.com and keep the redirect to ahakorean.com.

  • I am confirming that the only active site redirect in place is on ahakorean.com.

  • Thanks for confirming. I’ve refunded the original site redirect upgrade you bought. You should receive that within ten business days, depending on your bank.

I also want to let you know that the bug that prevented you from setting your site redirect as the primary domain has now been fixed. Thank you for bringing that to our attention :)

Looks like it is working now.

I may have found another bug by the way. The redirect looks to be fine on the domain setting page but on the top left menu it is saying redirecting to “koreangrammardifferently.wordpress.com”
