    Hi arringtonj153

Yes you can definitely start a Woocommerce store, but this is not available on the free plan that your blog is currently on. This is only available if your website is on the Business Plan.

Upgrading your plan to the Business plan is beneficial for not only being able to use plugins such as Woocommerce and SEO plugins, but during your first year on the plan, you can get a .com domain for free which is normally $19 a year currently.

You can get more information about Woocommerce from the support pages here –> https://wordpress.com/support/introduction-to-woocommerce/

    Hope that helps.

Hi folks, depending on the complexity of your requirements, you might also consider the WordPress.com eCommerce plan which comes with many additional WooCommerce features already built-in.

Hi folks, depending on the complexity of your requirements, you might also consider the WordPress.com eCommerce plan which comes with many additional WooCommerce features already built-in.

This leaves me curious. I just looked at the pricing chart and I see that the following is included on what is labeled as the Commerce plan:

    Everything in Business, plus:

    • Free domain for one year Get a custom domain – like yourgroovydomain.com – free for the first year.
    • Sell and ship products Sell and ship out physical goods from your site.
    • Store customization Offer customers a personalized shopping experience that they cannot find anywhere else.
    • Inventory management Stay on top of your stock with inventory management tools.
    • Easy checkout experience Reduce cart abandonment and increase sales with a fast, low-friction checkout.
    • Payments in 60+ countries Accept payments for goods and services, just about anywhere.
    • Sales reports Stay up to date on sales and identify trends with intuitive sales reports.
    • Integrations with top shipping carriers Ship physical products in a snap and show live rates from carriers like UPS.
    • Extensions marketplace

It sounds like all of these things are supposed to already be included in Woocommerce as a standalone plugin according the video presentation for Woocommerce in the support pages, and it isn’t clear as to whether or not Woocommerce is somehow limited in functionality on the Business plan if you install the Woocommerce plan, or if you need some of these other things that you can just install other plugins to fill the gap.

“Sell and ship products Sell and ship out physical goods from your site.” Aren’t you supposed to already be able to do this with Woocommerce on the Business plan?

“Store customization Offer customers a personalized shopping experience that they cannot find anywhere else.” What does this mean? If after installing Woocommerce and you choose a store template for it, you cannot make any customizations to it without the Commerce plan? Is this a crippled feature like the “global styles” that don’t show up in Block templates now unless you are on the Premium plan at mininum?

“Easy checkout experience Reduce cart abandonent and increase sales with a fast, low-friction checkout.” What is preventing customers from easily checking out in Woocommerce on the Business plan? Is there a difference in paying for an item on the Business plan version of Woocommerce versus the Commerce plan version?

“Payments in 60+ countries Accept payments for goods and services, just about anywhere.” If I want to sell worldwide, does this mean I can only do it if I have the Commerce plan version of Woocommerce? Should this not already be included in the Business plan version of Woocommerce?

“Sales reports Stay up to date on sales and identify trends with intuitive sales reports. Integrations with top shipping carriers Ship physical products in a snap and show live rates from carriers like UPS. Extensions marketplace” These last 3 items sound like something that a possible extra plugin could be needed for use if on the Business plan version of Woocommerce.

There is a reason I have all these questions.

I already have one of my websites on the Business plan (ddavidd.com) but have no need for using Woocommerce on that site as I bought that plan primarily for the 200GB storage that comes with it for photography and ebooks, but something may change in the future and I might want to build a store there of some sort, like for my ebooks.

I have another website (Dudecapz.com) that I am also considering to put on the Business plan with possible plans to use Woocommerce for selling hats that I make.

I’m not interested in the Commerce plan personally due to the expensive cost, but if I’m considering to open a store, I need to know what the limitations are between the two plans.

The Business plan is already outrageous in price, but that’s just my personal opinion based on my budget, and not intended as an insult to wordpress.com for it’s services. I’m only willing to pay for the Business plan as I am so far due to the convenience and ease WordPress.com provides in setting up a website versus trying to go somewhere else to run self hosting which is a pain I’ve dealt with in the past that I don’t want to do again, and because I have so many years since 2014 invested at wordpress.com on all of my websites whether they are paid sites or not, and service has been strong as far as uptime on my websites. I’ve never actually noticed any of my sites go down.

I would like some clarification please as to whether or not I will be able to use Woocommerce to it’s full extent as well as being able to install any needed plugins for it, or is there some functionality that is limited for use only if you purchase the Commerce plan?

Perhaps another way to ask that question is this: Does the Commerce plan offer a full suit of features for Woocommerce so that a user doesn’t have to worry about installing anything else, or can a user install whatever is needed for Woocommerce as needed on the Business plan… the differences being if you want certain functionality in Woocommerce that doesn’t come with the basic Woocommerce plugin on the Business plan, you have to install it yourself, where on the Commerce plan you would already get it? I hope that made sense, and thanks for your help.

Hi @dtpiixart I don’t think there are limitations with the Business plan/WooCommerce plugin, per se, but the eCommerce plan comes with many additional services in WooCommerce already installed and pre-configured. With the Business plan and the WooCommerce plugin, I believe you’d need to install and configure those extra services separately. (That’s also why I linked to the eCommerce plan support guide in my reply as it gives more details on that.)

Since I don’t have answers to all your questions, I’ve also flagged this thread for Staff assistance.

  • Howdy @dtpiixart the pricing pages provide more of a top-level view of the differences but, as @justjennifer stated, there is quite a bit more detail on the page here that explains what is included in the eCommerce plan: https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/ecommerce-plan/

The primary advantage of the eCommerce plan lies in its inclusion of numerous premium WooCommerce extensions at no additional cost. These pre-installed extensions simplify the process of setting up a large store, eliminating the need to individually select, purchase, and install them.

You can certainly start with the Business plan and add all the plugins included in the eCommerce plan to achieve the same functionality. However, purchasing these premium extensions individually for a Business site would quickly become more expensive than opting for the eCommerce plan. While the eCommerce plan comes at a higher cost, it offers overall savings compared to acquiring WooCommerce extensions separately on a Business site.

I hope this clears up any confusion. Since we seem to have strayed from the original poster’s topic, please feel free to start a new thread if you have further questions, and we can discuss there. Thank you!
