Woocommerce – 10,000+ products
-
Hi everyone. I’m looking to import virtual download products into Woocommerce, and I’m wondering if uploading this many products this will cause any performance issues? I’m on WordPress.com.
The files themselves will be hosted on Amazon S3, and I’ll be grouping the products together in one category, away from my ‘main’ store so users can download or buy files individually. I’ll also group together some of them as their own categories (for example, Guitar Sounds) so I can display accessible playlists. All of this will be paginated and I won’t show more than 100 sounds on a page.
I know how to import them using a CSV – my main concern is if this will impact performance?

Hello,
Thanks for reaching out and great to hear you have a detailed plan for your WooCommerce store on WordPress.com.
Importing a large number of products will not typically affect the performance of your site. WooCommerce is designed to handle stores with hundreds or even thousands of products. The CPU and bandwidth of your host, as well as the number of concurrent visitors on your site, can also affect your site’s load times, but you’re good there. Our managed hosting is very performant, able to handle high traffic volumes, and fully optimized for the needs of WordPress and WooCommerce at scale. We go into more detail here: https://wordpress.com/hosting/
Likewise I think that it’s a good move that the files you are uploading are hosted on Amazon S3, which is also a stable provider for serving files specifically. I would not expect that you will experience any issues of slowing down due to bandwidth or storage capacity based on what you have described.
However, displaying a large number of products on a single page could slow your site down, and I think that is something that is worth exploring. Any website will struggle when it is asked to display a lot of content on a single page, be it large image galleries, long displays of blog posts, or in your case products. This is not specifically a WordPress issue, but something that can affect any provider.
There are still some limits to how much data can be displayed in a single page view with current technology. For example, someone on a speedy laptop may be able to load a page with 100 products quite easily, where someone else on an older smartphone may struggle. That is a limitation no host can get around, so we do recommend some caution when displaying lists of products or pages with a lot of media.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
