Woocommerce Causing Critical Error

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently had an issue updating my homepage. Every time I’d try to edit the following message would pop up:

Through my own troubleshooting, I was able to verify that Woocommerce is causing this error. I’ve tried debugging it via the php file and updating it, but nothing seems to work unless I deactivate it, make my edits, and then reactivate it each time.

Is there some way I can fix the issue so I don’t have to deactivate wordpress every time to perform edits?

  • Hi there,

It’s possible WooCommerce with your theme. The error I’m seeing is related to memory exhaustion.

The PHP settings on sites hosted here at WordPress.com cannot be changed as they are globally fixed for all sites. We have a generous memory limit (512 MB — that’s half a gigabyte!). You can review the rest of our PHP environment settings here: https://wordpress.com/support/php-environment/

In general, memory exhaustion issues on a site are caused by plugins or themes that aren’t working correctly, not by a lack of memory. Performing an audit of your plugins and themes by deactivating them one by one and loading the page can help you determine the culprit. After doing so, please reach out to their respective developers for assistance.

Since you’ve already found that deactivating WooCommerce resolves the error, as a I next step, I recommend testing if the issue still persists with a different theme active.

You can use a staging site to test that out if you don’t won’t to temporarily alter the appearance of your live site.

Create a Staging Site on WordPress.com
    https://wordpress.com/support/how-to-create-a-staging-site/

Please let us know if the issue persists with another theme active, and we’ll continue investigating.

    Have a nice day!

Hi! I’ve tried a couple of different themes and there is still an issue. I’ve even tried themes that are tagged as “Woocommerce” themes and it still doesn’t work.

  • Hi there,

I’ve tried a couple of different themes and there is still an issue. I’ve even tried themes that are tagged as “Woocommerce” themes and it still doesn’t work.

In this case, one of the plugins you currently have might be conflicting with WooCommerce.

Please kindly try a plugin conflict test by following one of the methods outlined in https://wordpress.com/support/plugins/solve-problems-with-plugins/.

Also, if you don’t want to temporarily alter the appearance of your live site, you can use a staging site (https://wordpress.com/support/how-to-create-a-staging-site/) as previously suggested.
