Woocommerce Express

  • Unknown's avatar

These are all questions about woocommerce express. May be interested in upgrading.

Does woocommerce express allow you to give your customers real-time shipping rates? And if you’re using more than one service, give them the cheapest one without making them choose?

Can we transfer over our existing website to woocommerce express, with it being hosted on a different platform? What’s the process for that?

I’m assuming we still pay for the Google Ads? Just am not clear how that differs from normal Google advertising.

We have extensions on the site already. How will all the new extensions work with them? Will there be problems with that?

    Self-declared URL: skete.com
    Jetpack: Unknown
    WP.com: Unknown

  • Hey there,

Happy to help you with this.

Does woocommerce express allow you to give your customers real-time shipping rates? And if you’re using more than one service, give them the cheapest one without making them choose?

Yes it’s does, and by default the cheapest option would be selected when an item is added to a basket.

Can we transfer over our existing website to woocommerce express, with it being hosted on a different platform? What’s the process for that?

Where is the current site built and hosted with? We’ll do our best to provide steps on how to facilitate that migration.

I’m assuming we still pay for the Google Ads? Just am not clear how that differs from normal Google advertising.

Yes, that’s a separate service to WordPress.com and WooCommerce.

We have extensions on the site already. How will all the new extensions work with them? Will there be problems with that?

If the site is a WordPress site, then it can be migrated as is, with plugins and themes installed using a plugin, like our own migration plugin or a plugin called All in One WP Migrate.

Can you tell me the URL of the site you’re looking to migrate? Also, it sounds like you’re looking to take the site to the next level somewhat – what plans do you have exactly for the site?

    Looking forward to hearing more!

    1. Ok, so only one option – the cheapest – will show to the customer?

    2. The site is on woocommerce/wordpress, but hosted with someone else. Newtek, it’s a small hosting company. Right now we are sharing a server with other companies. How would the hosting work with woo express? How would it be faster/more secure?

    3) Ok, so what is exactly being offered with Google Ads?

    4) Skete.com is the URL. There might not be a way to know this, but since we already have a decent number of extensions on the website, and woo express comes with extensions built in, how will those work together? Could there be problems with speed/stability of the website?

We’re basically trying to get it to be a more efficient ecommerce platform, better for sales. Thank you!

  • Hi there,

Ok, so only one option – the cheapest – will show to the customer?

All options will show (if you have set up multiple shipping options in WooCommerce) but the one with the least cost will be pre-selected

The site is on woocommerce/wordpress, but hosted with someone else. Newtek, it’s a small hosting company. Right now we are sharing a server with other companies. How would the hosting work with woo express? How would it be faster/more secure?

First I should add that a limitation of the WooExpress trial (14 days free) is that you will not be able to import content from another store. However, after the trial is up and you have paid to continue the subscription you will be able to import as usual.

If you prefer to start with importing your store as a first step, instead of WooExpress you can consider the WordPress.com Business Plan, which is functionally similar and offered at the same cost.

Whether you start your site with WooExpress or WordPress.com Business, you will have access to our great in-house support (with priority Woo support access) and both sites use our WordPress.com Managed Hosting on the back end. More info about our hosting here: https://wordpress.com/hosting/

Ok, so what is exactly being offered with Google Ads?

Woo Express comes with functionality pre-installed that will sync with Google Merchant Center and allow you to control your product feed. This integration was built in partnership with Google, and for new Google Ads customers can get $500 in ad credit. This only applies to new customers though, and it sounds like you have an existing account so there would be no credit.

There might not be a way to know this, but since we already have a decent number of extensions on the website, and woo express comes with extensions built in, how will those work together? Could there be problems with speed/stability of the website?

Generally speaking Woo Express is currently optimized for new store owners, folks who are looking to get started in online sales. Once the 14 day trial is over you would be able to add any plugins you need, and I don’t see a problem with conflicts but it also does not sound like your best option. With everything you have mentioned here it does sound like the WordPress.com Business Plan would be your best fit. We offer a plugin that will migrate your entire site (an exact copy) with just a few clicks.

The Woocommerce Commerce (not business) plan looks like a 1:1 match with the higher level of woo express, right? Including 24/7 access to support and wordpress hosting? The only difference being that with Woocommerce Commerce plan we could migrate our whole store over to WordPress hosting.

Could you please break down how wordpress hosting is more stable and faster than other options?

If we were bringing over our store, like I said, our store already has plugins installed. Is there a way to know that it won’t cause speed/stability problems with the extensions offered in Woocommerce Commerce?

    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

The WordPress.com Commerce plan is the same as the WooCommerce Performance plan (shown here) for the most part – they’re hosted on the same infrastructure here at WordPress.com. One of the few differences is that the WooCommerce Performance plan is supported solely by WooCommerce support, but the Commerce plan is supposed by both WooCommerce and WordPress.com support staff.

However, since you have an existing WooCommerce/WordPress site, I’d highly recommend getting the Commerce plan which would allow you to use the Move to WordPress.com plugin to migrate your site.

As far as anything that would not be compatible, we have a list of plugins here that are incompatible with our hosting service.

Let us know if you have any other questions! We’re here to help. :)

Thanks so much. Three more questions:

Could you please break down how wordpress hosting is more stable and faster than other options?

Is there a way to know whether the plugins and extensions that we have currently installed on our store, are incompatible with the plugins and extensions that come with woocommerce commerce?

Is there a way to demo woocommerce commerce to know whether the extra plugins cause speed/stability issues for our store?

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for reaching back out!

Could you please break down how wordpress hosting is more stable and faster than other options?

Sure, so WordPress.com hosts sites on thousands of servers located in several separate data centers in different parts of the US and around the world, and it’s this global distribution that makes all the difference.

Where our data are located can be found here.

We also update our servers the the latest environments, most notably, the latest version of PHP.

In terms of stability, we take care of security for you and monitor downtime, should anything happen. We also update themes and plugins automatically if it’s permitted.

Is there a way to know whether the plugins and extensions that we have currently installed on our store, are incompatible with the plugins and extensions that come with woocommerce commerce?

Yes, there’s a full list of incompatible plugins here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/incompatible-plugins/

Is there a way to demo woocommerce commerce to know whether the extra plugins cause speed/stability issues for our store?

WooCommerce wouldn’t about tell you this, and generally speaking, with the nature of WordPress as a whole, you wouldn’t know this until their active.

Generally speaking, less is definitely more plugin wise, and a bloat in plugins can cause issues. It’s why plugin and theme selection can be important.

Is there a collection of plugins you’re worried about in particular?

Speak soon and looking forward to hearing more!

Another question – is there somewhere where I can read about how the porting over hosting works? Is there potentially a domain name change?

We’re basically concerned about messing with our SEO. Is that not a concern?

  • Hey there,

    Thanks for reaching back out!

is there somewhere where I can read about how the porting over hosting works?

These chapters here: https://wordpress.com/support?s=migration&group_id=blog_id%3A9619154 explain about what porting involves, via the different methods.

Is there potentially a domain name change?

No, not for what is publicly visible. To paraphrase, this is what the process entails:

    1. Create a site on WordPress.com, site is created under a temporary domain (for example: mysite.WordPress.com).
    2. The migration of the site takes place (Using Move to WordPress.com plugin). The live site, remains as is. The site at WordPress.com is a duplicate of the live site, under the temporary domain.
    3. The domain is then either transferred away from the current host, or connected to WordPress.com using custom DNS.
    4. One connected, the domain for site at WordPress.com can be switched from mysite.WordPress.com to the custom domain, skete.com

We’re basically concerned about messing with our SEO. Is that not a concern?

It sounds like you’re perhaps worried about broken links, or redirects, is that correct?

If yes, then you wouldn’t need to worry because no domains or page and post links are changing, and so search engines will be unaffected.

If there’s something specific about SEO that you’re worried about, let us know and we’ll be happy to reassure you. :)

Would we be sharing server-IP Addresses with other companies? Or is it an exclusive server-IP address?

  • Hey there,

    Thanks for reaching back out!

Would we be sharing server-IP Addresses with other companies? Or is it an exclusive server-IP address?

WordPress.com is a shared hosting environment, and IP addresses can be used to connect domains, however, on occasion these IP addresses can change as we make infrastructure changes.

We always recommend using name servers to connect the domain:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

Out of curiosity, are you enquiring about shared hosting with regards to GDPR? If yes, this guide here, explains more: https://wordpress.com/support/your-site-and-the-gdpr/

    I hope this helps.

Hi, just a question about the transfer. Does the site remain live at all times?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Also, what are name servers?

Is there a way to check in advance who we will be sharing a server with?

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry, one last question. In regards to the site remaining live at all times, my understanding is that the site needs to run ideally on both the old and new server for 24h because changes to the DNS records need up to that long to propagate through the DNS system. So is that something that will happen?

    Thanks so much!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry, seems I have one more. We currently have shipping provided through XPS which integrates with Woocommerce. We have custom rates for USPS through it, it provides real time shipping rates to customers, and it makes labels. We have separate custom rates through UPS outside XPS.

How does woocommerce commerce interact with this? It sounds like it will replace XPS’ job of providing shipping rates to customers and making labels. As for the negotiated rates, is there a way to have our current negotiated rates through the shipping function of woocommerce commerce? Or get better ones?

  • Hi again,

Hi, just a question about the transfer. Does the site remain live at all times?

Sorry, one last question. In regards to the site remaining live at all times, my understanding is that the site needs to run ideally on both the old and new server for 24h because changes to the DNS records need up to that long to propagate through the DNS system. So is that something that will happen?

Yes, the transfer can be seamless, but in order for that to work you will need to fully set up your WordPress.com site with us before pointing the domain here. That way your current site on Network Solutions can stay “live” until your site on WordPress.com is ready to replace it.

We will assign a staging subdomain you can use for migration so you can get set up in private, make sure that everything is transferred over, and consider any design updates you may wish to make outside of the public eye. When you are ready to “launch” the new site to replace the current one, that is when you will want to “map” or transfer your domain to us.

This will ensure that when the new domain settings take effect, a visitor will see the same site (on WordPress.com) as they would see on Network Solutions.

    Also, what are name servers?

They are the settings you add to your domain to tell it what server to connect to. By default your registrar (Network Solutions) has added names server settings to your domain to route traffic to your Network Solutions hosting. But your site can be hosted with any company, and you can change the settings of your domain to connect to it, without actually needing to transfer your domain.

Essentially this allows you to use skete.com as the address of your WordPress.com site, instead of the address we assign. Also anyone that visits skete.com will see the new site once it replaces the old one, including search engines.

Is there a way to check in advance who we will be sharing a server with?

Sites on our Business and Commerce plans use dedicated resources. You can learn more here: https://wordpress.com/hosting/

The WordPress.com Commerce Plan comes with several premium WooCommerce extensions that you would normally pay for separately but are included free with this plan. I’m not sure exactly what integrations you are using with your current site, but here are the shipping integrations that are included:

I don’t have a matrix of costs handy but you can click on the links above to find out more info. On each landing page you can dig even deeper by looking in the sidebar for Support > Documentation, which will show you the full documentation for the extension along with FAQ and setup instructions explaining all features.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for your generous responses. Just enquiring about some other aspects:

    1. Is it possible to upgrade the storage from 50 GB if need be?
    2. Does your bandwidth have either a visitor or a GB cap?
    3. Can you please break down the security some more – or is there a page I can read? I didn’t get a clear sense on the website. Other hosters have said that in the event of a breach they will clean it up for free. Is this something all of you do?

    Thanks so much.

  • Hi again,

Great, glad you have had some time to think on this! Happy to answer any further questions as well.

Is it possible to upgrade the storage from 50 GB if need be?

Definitely, we offer Storage Add-on with options for 50 GB Storage and 100 GB Storage. I will also say that for most average websites 50GB is a lot of storage space, and we rarely have site owners that go over. Those that get close to the limit are often working with media files (videos, for example) or something else that is known to require a lot of storage. Based on what I see of skete.com currently, I don’t think you will ever get close to the default storage limit

Does your bandwidth have either a visitor or a GB cap?

No caps on either of these, you can have as many visitors as you wish. Our global edge cache and CDN, powered by 25+ data centers across 6 continents, ensures that traffic is well-distributed, and our automated burst scaling will cruise through any traffic spike without breaking a sweat. We go into more detail about our tech stack here: https://wordpress.com/hosting/

Can you please break down the security some more – or is there a page I can read? I didn’t get a clear sense on the website.

I understand your concerns about security. On WordPress.com, we take security seriously and have numerous measures and protocols in place to ensure your website is safe and secure. Here’s an overview:

    1. Automated Backups: WordPress.com automatically backs up your website incrementally, and backups are easily accessible by site admins. In case of any issues, you could quickly restore your site to a previous “clean state”, which is by far the fastest way to recover the site.
    2. Brute Force Protection: We have protection against brute force attacks as standard with your WordPress.com login, which is what you will use to access your site. This feature works by blocking login attempts from hackers trying to guess your password.
    3. Software Updates: We handle all WordPress software and security updates, so you can focus more on creating great content and less worrying about site maintenance.
    4. Automated Malware Scanning: If malware is found on the website then we act quickly to clean it by removing the affected files or directories and notify you via email. More info on this specifically here: https://wordpress.com/support/malware-and-site-security/
    5. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Free SSL certificates are included for all domains hosted on WordPress.com. It not only secures the connection between websites and your visitors but helps improve your SEO too.

There’s more detailed information about WordPress.com security you can find in our documentation here
