Word Press Complications

Ok, Lets start from the beginning. So I wanted to get into blogging, I have read a million of them, and read more books on it than anyone should. In each book/site they recommend two blogging host sites: Word press and bloggers. SO i got both in free platform. But i am really really wanting wordpress because of self host. Now here are my problems: i am currently blogging on Blogger because I cannot for the life of me figure out this site. I cant add my widgets to my posts, I cannot figure out the menus. THE MAIN PROBLEM IS I WANT TO BE SELF HOSTED BUT I WANT TO PAY MONTHLY NOT YEARLY. Please help me.
