Word Press Domain GoDaddy Host, no luck pointing DNS please help
-
Our domain is too new to transfer to Godaddy. So we wanted to point the names servers.
GoDaddy Support tells us we need to change both our A Record and use their custom name servers. However word press has a switch that must be turned on or off to access either the A record or the name servers.
We can only change one. As soon as we try to change the a record the name servers revert to word press and as soon as we change the name servers the option to route the A record disappears.. Right now our domain is parked “courtesy of wordpress”.
Can someone please help and clarify what steps need to be taken to rectify this issue?

I am not sure why they are telling you that. You should use either nameservers or A records, not both. Using both results in exactly the situation you describe.
I would try each individually and see if that works.

Hey roojosh,
Thank you for getting back to us. We will try and switch back to the A records. Since using the custom name servers resulted in wordpress.com parking the domain.
However last time we did that and used the A records. When we were on our GoDaddy.com account and when we clicked on “manage site” It brought us to our wordpress.com dashboard. However it was the limited version with a free theme.
We bought hosting from godaddy so that we could use a purchased custom theme and initially we were able to upload it. But then what seemed to be happening was that whenever we clicked on “manage site” it was arbitrarily switching from the limited dashboard with our free theme, to the newly updated custom theme that we bought along with a more functional dashboard.
One other thing that seems confusing to me, is that when I have the option to add an “A record” or a “CNAME” i already see a:
A record .*expandingsound.com
(this site is managed by wordpress.com)CNAME http://www.expandingsound.com
(this site is managed by wordpress.com)—-Then under those I have the option to add or remove other “A records” However I can’t edit or remove the existing ones that say are pointed to wordpress.com.
Is it okay to have the same A record pointing to two different things?

A little update:
I found out part of the problem but now im running into another issue. Originally I kept on going to “Domains” which is under the “My Site” Dashboard on wordpress.com – its url is: wordpress.com/domains/manage/ here I was only able to toggle between using the wordpress.com name servers and editing the DNS records or using custom name servers.
However,
I discovered that there is another domains location which I was able to get to by going to http://www.wordpress.com/My-Domains.
Here is where I found a more familiar Domains Management menu. That a lot of the support sites were showing. This allowed me to access both Name Servers and where I can edit the DNS A records.
Now my issue seems to be that when I change and edit the DNS A records from this menu and save it… As soon as I leave the menu and then go back to it. The A record I enter is no longer there. Also the NS and CNAME that say “handled by wordpress” are neither editable nor deletable.

Can you let me know what A Record you are attempting to save? I will try and enter them for you.

Hey rootjosh thank you for getting back to me.
It seems that after I posted that update, I don’t know exactly what I did but it seems that eventually i was able to edit the CNAME that was handled by wordpress under the http://www.wordpress.com/my-domains menu screen. I changed that to an A record and added my own CNAME and now the “save” seems to stick.
my only thought is that after fooling around with it i managed to land on the right combination of Name Servers and A records, perhaps all the switching just needed a chance to settle in and propagate which then allowed it to save. ::shrugs::
The site seems to be working now and my wp-admin takes me to the right wordpress dashboard.
Thank you again for your help and quick responses. Everything seems to be in order at this point.
