Word Press Domain vs Go Daddy??

  • Unknown's avatar

I know that this is a WordPress.org forum, but I need help figuring out if I should proceed with a WordPress.com domain or a GoDaddy domain?

I have religiously used GoDaddy for the past decade and need to know that if I get a GoDaddy domain for my WP.com blog, that I can use it. I read somewhere that WP charges $13 to use a domain that is hosted through another domain provider… is this true?

    Thanks,

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The answer is yes. You can register a domain through Godaddy first and then map to an existing domain from a .wordpress.COM URL.

WordPress.COM hosting is free of charge. When you purchase an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade that’s all you get – nothing more and nothing less. See here

NOTE: WordPress.COM blogs do not have permanent IP addresses. IP addresses here can and do can change over time and your domain may stop working if you rely on them. For more information about domain mapping and IP addresses please read https://en.support.wordpress.com/ip-addresses/

    re: mapping an existing domain
All wordpress.com blogs are on .wordpress.com subdomains.
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and can be separately purchased or a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium and Business upgrade bundles. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it, and also renew the domain mapping purchase here, each and every year.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL. If you do not register a .wordpress.com blog URL first then the software supplies the dot whatever URL so you can proceed with your domain mapping purchase.

Your billing history will be at Dashboard > Store > Billing History

Your only options for payment are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/

It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
