Hi there,
So I am looking to either upgrade to the $5 or $10 a month web plans but I have some questions.
1. Once I upgrade am I able to change the theme of my blog or does word press do that for me? And how do I get a backup copy of my blogs? (I am currently on the free plan)2. Will it affect my email address when I upgrade?
3. How do I go about going from the free plan to the paid one?

You can change your site’s theme at any time. The only time we’ll automatically change the theme for you is if you have a Premium Theme active, and then let your plan expire – then we’ll switch you back to a default free theme. Otherwise, the theme will only change if you change it.
And how do I get a backup copy of my blogs?
We take care of backups automatically on WordPress.com, and there isn’t a way to download a full backup of your site. You can export your site’s content at My Site ->Settings, but that will only contain the content of posts, pages and comments on your site as a machine-readable .xml file, and does not include your site’s source code or media files.
2. Will it affect my email address when I upgrade?
I’m not sure what you mean. Your email address you use for WordPress.com is connected to your WordPress.com account, and can only be changed from account settings. Nothing you do on any individual site in your account can affect your email address used for the account.
3. How do I go about going from the free plan to the paid one?
Click on My Site ->Plans, and click Upgrade on the plan you want to add. Complete the checkout process, and the features for the plan you selected will be active on your site.
