Word Press's terrible failure

  • Unknown's avatar

I am stuffed. Been a WordPress devotee since I set up my blog Towards Better Democracy in 2006. Since that I have never had a problem. Never had to use the support function of WP.

Now I have reason. I want to shout from the rooftops, scream blue murder.

When WP people in their infinite wisdom came and fiddled with a system that was functioning perfectly, at least well, with no problems visible problems, made some changes that to my view were cosmetic.

But they did something terrible. To my way of thinking, catastrophic. WP, my blog could always, let me stress always, saved. A draft stayed a draft until I forgot it or deleted years later.

Now – it is horrible – I am incensed. I have just lost my third work because the system as it now is, does not save, There is no indication that WP does save.

I walk away and leave the writing up. Come back and it is gone. Lost for ever. Some of my best writing I have ever done. A piece I started this morning and took a break from four and a half hours later. Heavan help us if the writing was for a deadline. Don’t even think that the work was for income.

    The third time.

Come on, Word Press, what are going to do about? And don’t come with, “Oh we know about the problem. We trying to fix it.” That’s not how WP have been.

Word Press has been the go to place for this sort of medium for a reason. Consistency.

    Now we have flagrant delinquency.

Soft words, money, will not replace what I have lost, The third piece. What I want to see is the problem fixed. Within hours.

A reliable saving function. I don’t think it is too much to ask.

Of course, you can say, Malcolm, it is your own fault, you didn’t do … you didn’t read the fine print.

No means of preview. No means of going in and correcting the comment I just made?

The bottom line here is that wordpress.COM is not going to revert back to what it was.

I walk away and leave the writing up. Come back and it is gone. Lost for ever. Some of my best writing I have ever done. A piece I started this morning and took a break from four and a half hours later. Heavan help us if the writing was for a deadline. Don’t even think that the work was for income.

If the post was created on the dashboard of your own blog at Dashboard > Pages > Add New then you ought to be able to recover a lost post or page from revisions if needed.

P.S. This is not related to your issue. You are running a very old and retired theme. Themes are retired when they no longer support all wordpress.com features. The recommendation is to switch to a newer theme. Browses these themes https://wordpress.com/themes/free?s=Three

    re: switching themes
Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs.
Note that switching themes https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#switch-themes can be easily done, provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the site, you to

    http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php

*Replace NAME_OF_BLOG in that URL with the actual name of your blog. wp-admin/themes.php

We have a preview function. No content is lost when switching themes on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. It does not matter if the site is private or public.

Provided you are logged in as Admin under the username account that registered the site go to https://wordpress.com/themes and type in your key words, select features, or the name of theme.

If you are not logged in under the correct WordPress.COM username account then clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies prior to logging into another account

If you did not register the site and do not have the required access you need to contact the person who registered the account and site under it and have them either act, or transfer the site to your username account by using this process. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.

I am nice guy contrary to what may come across in my comment. I find some of the responses unhelpful and repulsive. One is very helpful for which I am thankful and bless the sender. The suggestions of value that I can use.

I must add that WP, when I signed up for another blog site with you, were not just helpful but exemplary. Those individuals who assisted me went out of their way to help. I say this to dispel any sense of sour grapes that may have come across.

And nobody suggested you revert to the old way. I certainly did not,

  • Hi there,

What is the URL (or title in case of a draft) of the post that didn’t save? Did you check the revisions of the post as @timethief mentioned above to see if your missing content is saved in an earlier version?

Are you saying that autosave didn’t work, or that text disappeared from the editor while the browser was left open?

The latter should not be possible. I’ll need to know the exact computer/browser environment you’re using and the exact steps that led to that happening so I can try and replicate the behaviour on my end. If we can’t replicate it, we have no hope of finding the cause and fixing it.

If the former, I’d look towards a browser issue. I just checked on my own site, and autosave is working as expected, as pictured here:

    https://cloudup.com/c2JvucxzPN3

When the text displays as Save, you can also click on it to force a save at that point.

If that indicator is not showing for you, it means the code that makes it work is not loading in your browser. In that case, clear the cache, make sure that your browser has JavaScript enabled, and that there aren’t any browser extensions that might be blocking JavaScript from working.

Although I tend to write long emails I am not good at reading long official ones full of fine print. The stuff I have received as a result of my dreadful misbehaviour, for which I can never be forgiven, is full of helpful stuff. Sorting through them has one’s eyes glaze over. But I appreciate the help and understand where ya’ll are coming from.

No the auto save does not appear to work.

At the risk of going on and one, which I would not trouble to do if I did not think that it is worth it, WP is, let me tell my story.

I am certain that I am not the only one to have suffered – suffered? – at the changes made some months ago.

The changes were made during the night in great secrecy with no explanation of what effect the changes would have.

The save button had disappeared and frequently work does not show in the draft section. I don’t see chasing every rabbit. WP has always been seamless to use in the past. That, I am sure, in part accounts for its popularity.

To say in such stentorian terms that WP is not going back to the old way when did not say such a thing is to have you sound like a vast ugly corporation: “The decision has been made.”

Two final points. If my template is old why did not WP say so. Microsoft warned and warned that they would no longer support an old version of their software platform. But they did.

The browser I use for the blog is Safari. It is clear to me that I spend far too much time writing instead of reading but writing is what I do.

The text is not there. That was the point in making a fuss in the first place. That is 41/2 hours of writing lost. How you feel? I will repeat for the benefit of those who do not listen.

WP used to save seamlessly and I never since 2006 until now have lost anything. Is anyone getting the point? I am not donkey stupid and do not care to be treated as such.

I simply don’t understand what is going on here. When recently I took out another URL to launch a second you guys were unfailingly helpful. I could not have wished for more.

Just in case you are thinking it, I am not angry, merely vexed.

  • No the auto save does not appear to work.

Did you try the suggestions I gave regarding clearing the cache and checking JavaScript and browser extensions?

And can you please check if it happens if you use a different browser than Safari?
