word verification
-
Challenge sites I have visited have asked me to turn off word verification to make it easier for people to leave comments on my blog, but I can’t work out how to do this on WordPress.

Hi there,
What is you site URL?
Are you using Google ReCAPTCHA plugin for the word verification on your site?
-
I am not using anything extra. I am told that word verification is a default setting on blogs, but perhaps it isn’t on WordPress. I can’t find out, so thought I would ask.

Hi again,
Ive checked somethings out but will need a staff to reconfirm the details. From what i read this feature is by default so I’m not sure how to turn it off. let’s have staff answer this question.
1. How can we deactivate the reCAPTCHA feature as mentioned by flowerweavinglady?
2. Does this feature comes with the already installed plugin Akismet?
3. Akistmet is installed by default but I was told we have to activate it? True/false?
4. If we have upgraded our plans, are they more reCAPTCHA plugins to be installed? Thanks for solving issue out.

Hi there!
Let me try to answer all these questions :)
How can we deactivate the reCAPTCHA feature as mentioned by flowerweavinglady?
There is no reCAPTCHA on WordPress.com so I’m not sure where did you see that, @flowerweavinglady?
Does this feature comes with the already installed plugin Akismet?
No, it is not part of Akismet.
Akistmet is installed by default but I was told we have to activate it? True/false?
You do not have to activate anything, Akismet is activated automatically on all WordPress.com sites.
If we have upgraded our plans, are they more reCAPTCHA plugins to be installed?
That’s correct, you can install a reCAPTCHA plugin on Business and eCommerce plans.

What she meant was Word Verification. Is this a default feature that people must fill out before leaving a comment? I’ve come across many people asking how to switch it off or remove this. I haven’t come across it though on my free plan (i know you have this option with paid plans) but it exist on the free plan?

Thanks staff-mckluskey fro clarifying.

Hi there, I hope you don’t mind me adding to this discussion.
I’m not sure what “Word Verification” is. ?
In order to leave a comment on weavingyarnflowers.wordpress.com you do need to either log in with a social account (twitter, FB, Google and WPcom) or at the very minimum an email address, provided you aren’t already logged in to a WPcom account when visiting that site.
The social account log in helps verify that the person is who they say they are and leaving only an email address a user can list anything, real or fictitious.
If you want to turn all that off and allow anonymous comments on weavingyarnflowers.wordpress.com, (which I strongly recommend against doing so since it tends to become a spam magnet) you need to change your site’s discussion settings https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/ under Other Comment Settings and uncheck the boxes next to #1 and #2 there https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings
Hope that also helps.

hi @justjennifer. Thanks for joining in and sharing more information.
Well Word verification is the CAPTCHA form that asks you a question to ensure that your results are being displayed to a real person, as opposed to a machine that is collecting information for illegal purposes, and helps to reduce system loads which improves site performance. If you don’t see an image, make sure your browser is set to display images and try again. If you’re not sure about what the word is, make your best guess. If you’re incorrect, you’ll get another chance to enter a different word on the next screen. Its so helpful to reduce spam but in many cases it discourage people from leaving comments as to when theltters or numbers become unreadable. So may question again is, since i’ve not come across this feature yet, is it a default feature as this member is using a free plan?

I’ve try searching everywhere for this feature but cant find it in order to turn it off. Do you where is it located? because it’s not under the discussion section. Thank you again.

As staff-mckluskey already mentioned in their reply, WordPress.com doesn’t have CAPTCHA or any other word verification system. So, there’s no setting to turn it off.
The built-in anti-spam filter (Akismet) is protecting the comment section. Please read our documentation about this here:

Thanks everybody, looks as if there wasn’t a problem in the first place. Not having had my blog here very long, I am still finding out how things work. Now I know a bit more than I did before!

Good Morning –
flowerweavinglady, thanks for letting us know that you’ve got it all sorted.

Hey @nomadicpulse I do know what CAPTCHAs are, but as has been mentioned above they are not in use on WPcom websites by default. The use of the term “Word Verification” was a bit of a puzzle for me.
@flowerweavinglady – Glad to know this wasn’t the issue here and glad we could help. Our support site is really an excellent resource and for a general introduction to working with a site here on WPcom, https://wordpress.com/learn/ Cheers! -
