    Hi There,

The good news is that any WordPress.com website is able to use WordAds monetization. For more information take a look at the following sites:

    https://wordads.co/ – WordAds
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/monetize-your-site – Monetize your site

Let me know how you go

Hi there, in order to participate in WordAds, you will need to have a custom domain name, as mentioned in the FAQ here: https://wordads.co/faq/

    Eligibility

Q: Why do I need a custom domain name?
A: We are unable to provide WordAds for sites with the default free [example].wordpress.com URL, so you’ll need to either register a new domain name or map an existing domain name to your WordPress.com blog of choice.

You can register or map a custom domain name with all of the upgrade plans.

Actually, I see an inconsistency between the Monetize Your Site guide (which mentions that free WordPressdotcom sites are eligible if they meet the traffic requirement) and the WordAds FAQ, so I’ve tagged this for Staff input.

    Thanks Justjennifer for that

  • Hi there,

Any WordPress.com site with a custom domain can apply. Whether or not you’re approved depends on meeting the minimum traffic requirement, and of course accepting and keeping to the WordAds terms of service.

However, if you purchase the Premium or Business plan, you can enable WordAds immediately, regardless of traffic. But if you don’t have a lot of traffic, you won’t earn much in any case. And you’ll still need a custom domain first.

Free WordPress.com sites in this context means the free plan, i.e. a site with just a domain. See the third bullet on Monetize your site :)

    Thanks for that clarification @kokkieh.

Until now I’ve understood the word “free” to mean any WordPressdotcom site without any upgrade. If a site has a custom domain (even grandfathered sites with only a domain or mapping) they are not “free.” Still somewhat confused by the wording in the monetize guide but maybe more ice coffee will help.

  • It does say:

WordPress.com bloggers, who are using a Free or Personal Plan

But I completely understand the confusion. Assume that all upgrade-related docs are plan-centric, if that helps. If a page somewhere doesn’t include the word “Plan”, it probably should. So, “site on the free Plan” rather than a “free site”
