WordAds Sudden Drop
-
Beginning 17 June 2025, the number of ads served and consequently, daily revenue, dropped significantly, with days having zero despite being more or less consistent with the daily visits/views. Is this something isolated, or is there any particular event that is causing this?

I’m glad to hear that someone else is having this problem, and it’s not just me! I tried to ask about it several days ago, and they just brushed me off saying that these things fluctuate.

Advertising rates fluctuate constantly. The online ad system is similar to the stock market, where advertisers bid in real time. Therefore, it’s normal to see different earning amounts each week, month, year, and for each site you run ads on. – https://wordpress.com/support/wordads-and-earn/collect-ad-earnings/#how-earnings-are-calculated

I’m not talking about the cpm, which has actually risen recently for my site, weirdly at the exact same time that my ads served numbers dropped. (Also, weirdly, it’s back up to what it once was before last fall, when it abruptly dropped to what it is now.)
Just suddenly, about the same time as the OP said, my ads served suddenly dropped to about 1/3 to 1/5 what they were, pretty steadily before, and they’ve been that way ever since. The number of impressions has stayed the same and even improved some days, but that’s a pretty steep drop in ads served with no apparent reason. I’ve never had a seasonal fluctuation like that at this time of year, and I said, my number of viewers/views has increased slightly, not dropped. It’s also kind of weird that it happened right at the same time as someone else experienced the same thing. In fact, there’s a third post on the forum about a similar issue, also from this June – https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/wordads-revenue-dropping-not-showing-issues-with-reporting/
When I asked before, they told me that there weren’t any updates to the system or the way ads are served, but I’m wondering if that’s true.

i have exactly the same problem, ads program is not clear and will never be as far as I understand. High traffic –> low ads displayed today, why you’ll never know how they manage, just take it as it is, anyway if you’re already making money, nice money I mean, just switch to business plan and manage other ads platform. I have same prob but for the money we are talking it’s not a big drama for me. but frustrating…

Hi everyone!
Thank you for your insights. Unfortunately though, still the same. I actually think it’s getting worse. I understand the fluctuation and all, but this seems weird especially that it seems to establish a pattern. I am not sure, of course.
Totally hoping to get someone from the WP Team to shed some light as to what actually is going on.

Hello again, here’s another forum reply from staff that may be of interest to those posting here

I noticed this problem myself, the ratio of visitors to Ad served was similar all the time, and now it has dropped sharply in the last month. Well, it doesn’t seem like random fluctuations to me.

This problem was previously written about 1.5 years ago, I quote “It looks like this issue is due to the statistics for WordAds not importing correctly and is not due to a loss of earnings.”

Hi @skavius,
Could you please share the WordPress.com site where you are experiencing fluctuations in ads? I couldn’t find a site with active ads on your WordPress.com. -
Thanks! I got the message, and the explanation helps. I had the feeling that something must have changed, and it does help to know what it was and why. For the benefit of others, the gist is that WordPress has switched to a new ad partner, and this effect seems to be due to the transition.

Hi @skavius,
The issue in your site seems to be related to the ad partner switch.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to switch to a new ad partner. This transition may cause a temporary decrease in ad revenue. Please be assured we’re doing everything we can to minimize this impact and provide a smooth transition.
Our new partner calculates impressions more accurately, so the numbers may appear lower — but revenue should remain stable as the integration normalizes. We expect this to normalize in the coming days.
To increase the number of ads shown (and potentially revenue), you can: • Add more paragraph content in your posts.
• Insert additional ad blocks: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/ad-block/
Also, please note that overall ad impressions depend on several factors — not just the number of ad placements on your site, but also the amount of traffic you receive. More visitors mean more opportunities for ads to be displayed, so increasing your site traffic can also positively impact ad performance. We have a guide to increase traffic that you can follow here: https://wordpress.com/support/getting-more-views-and-traffic/
Let me know if that helps.
