The ‘WordPress embed’ function doesn’t appear in the list. Just ’embed.’ When I use that it looks fine in the edit screen, but in preview it’s just the URL – not a little picture with some text.
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with the embed function. Could you kindly provide a bit more information on what exactly you’re trying to embed? Are you embedding a video, an image, or perhaps a social media post? Details about the content type you’re trying to embed will help me understand your situation better.
Also, it would be very helpful if you could share the URL of the post or page you’re working on. This way, I can have a closer look and provide more specific advice.

My WordPress options has Embed and WordPress.TV, but no WordPress.Embed.
The Post URL is: https://chukarblog.wordpress.com/2023/05/19/oxford-students-try-to-deplatform-kathleen-stock-punish-the-university-group-inviting-her-jerry-coyne/I gave up and posted it a different way. I was embedding a link to another person’s WordPress blog: https://whyevolutionistrue.com/2023/05/19/oxford-students-try-to-deplatform-kathleen-stock-and-to-sever-ties-with-group-inviting-her/
So I created a copy, unposted, which contains the original problem.
In the Preview screen for the copy, the embedded link showed only as the link itself:
https://whyevolutionistrue.com/2023/05/19/oxford-students-try-to-deplatform-kathleen-stock-and-to-sever-ties-with-group-inviting-her/
But in the Edit screen it showed as a nice little image/link which you might be able to see here: https://chukarblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=35695&action=edit
Here’s a Snip of the image, if it will display. All I’m trying to do is get this image into the Preview and final posting.

Hi there,
I am able to see the issue and would like our developers to take a closer look. Before I report this I am curious have you had this issue with other links you’ve embedded in the past? Do you have this same issue if you try a different link?
Also apologies that during the investigation of this issue your post was inadvertently published. It was not shared to social media but email subscribers may have received a notification of the post. It has been set to draft status again in our preview tool.

I’ve never tried to embed the link this way before. Except for YouTube videos, which display quite nicely, and links to ZOOM meetings, I just link the URL to a word or phrase and let people click on the word/phrase. I thought I’d try this as I liked its appearance.

Hey there,
I’ve taken a look at https://chukarblog.wordpress.com/2023/05/19/oxford-students-try-to-deplatform-kathleen-stock-punish-the-university-group-inviting-her-jerry-coyne/ and I can see the text is given a link as you’ve described.
I can also see the embed block when searching for this:

To check, are you seeing the same?

I don’t get any of that text you show off the the right, just to be clear. Just the columns of embed options.

Hi there,
If you are referring to the text (and icons) on the left, that is shown when you use persistent block inserter button at the top left of the editor view. It does the same thing as the “+” symbol you see in the page layout for adding blocks, but it does show an expanded block list.

Yes, I get the same items when I enter “embed” into the search field.
Thanks for clarifying. I investigated this on a test site and was able to determine that the issue seems to be related to your theme (Nucleare) which is an older theme that was launched in 2015. This theme predates the block editor by many years, and was not designed with it in mind, so while it has basic block compatibility, it does not work with specialized blocks sometimes like the embed block that is added when you paste a URL into your blog post.
Generally speaking we recommend switching to a newer theme that has 100% block compatibility, and that is what I used on my test site and was able to embed the link without issue. You can see our most recent themes here, all of which were designed with the block editor in mind: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-site-editing
However, this is not the only option. Given that you do not use this embed feature often, you could consider taking a screenshot of the embed (as it’s shown when you first attempt to add it) and then use this screenshot as an image in your post. When you add it as an image, you can click on the link icon in the toolbar for the image block, and set the image link to the article you are trying to share.
Visitors to your site will click on the image (thinking it’s an embed) and will be taken directly to the post on the other site. For them it will be completely seamless and will work exactly as the embed would.
It’s not the most elegant solution, but it will allow you to handle occasional embeds like this by employing the workaround. If you find down the road that you are embedding more frequently (it sounds like you like the formatting) I would definitely recommend switching to a newer theme.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the tips. I like the Nucleare font (rather elegant, I think) so I haven’t previously changed. Plus I have a hard time figuring in advance what features other themes do & don’t have (underline or color change for words with weblinks, for example).
I’ll try your idea of using a screen shot image with a link.
Many thanks.
