I transferred my wordpress site to a self-hosted site but my comments on my new posts I publish through blue host won’t transfer. Can I transfer all of my comments to my new site? Also I am getting a lot less comments on my self-hosted site than I was with wordpress. Is there a reason for this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

What do you mean your comments won’t transfer? If you exported your WordPress.com site at My Site ->Settings ->Export and imported that file to your new site, all comments on the WordPress.com site would have been migrated as well.

From that point on nothing you do on the new site has any connection to your WordPress.com site, and vice versa.

Also I am getting a lot less comments on my self-hosted site than I was with wordpress. Is there a reason for this?

There can be several reasons: If you used to get a lot of comments from people who found your site via Google searches, you might be getting less now as the new site will first need to be indexed again by Google and won’t appear in search results yet.

If you yourself are commenting less on other sites fewer people might be visiting your site to comment.

If your website in your WordPress.com account settings still links to the old WordPress.com site, it means that site is still linked to your username when you comment, meaning people clicking on your username will be going to your old site rather than the new one.

Your new site will not be listed in Tag search in the Reader, as only self-hosted sites on a paid Jetpack plan are listed there. So if a lot of commenters used to find your site that way, you’ve essentially lost that traffic.

Your most recent content on your site might not be something that people want to comment on.

Or it could just be a natural slump. Blog views and comments fluctuate over time.

  • Oh, and unless you transferred your WordPress.com followers to the new site none of them will be seeing your new posts in the Reader or their email notifications, as they’ll still be following the old site where you no longer post.

You can see here for instructions on how to migrate your followers:

Thanks for this info! I believe people were finding my blog through reader which they couldn’t anymore because I am self-hosted. Being self-hosted on BlueHost, if I purchase a JetPack plan, then my posts would show up on reader again? Do I need to tag my posts differently? I also don’t have a like button on my new self-hosted site. Is that a part of the theme I have and can select another theme with this feature?

    Thanks!

You don’t need a Jetpack plan for your posts to show up in the Reader – people can still follow your posts there just like they could with your WordPress.com site. But you’ll need to transfer your WordPress.com followers to the new site before they’ll see posts from the new site in their Reader feeds.

A paid Jetpack plan is only required to have your site included in the Tag Search and Recommended Posts sections in the Reader.

Do I need to tag my posts differently?

How you tag your posts has no effect on whether or not the Reader will show them.

I also don’t have a like button on my new self-hosted site. Is that a part of the theme I have and can select another theme with this feature?

The Like button is not part of your theme. That is a WordPress.com feature that is added to your site by the Jetpack plugin. If you don’t see the option to enable Likes in the editor, then you likely don’t have that feature switched on in Jetpack.

To switch it on, go to WP-Admin, and then click on Jetpack ->Settings ->Sharing – on a standard WordPress install that would be at http://lifewithkim.org/wp-admin/admin.php?page=jetpack#/sharing
