  I didn’t know that I just had to pick the .com option. I got it to work after that. I will have the ability to change it if I choose a paid account later, correct? Having a bunch of numbers after my name is not ideal. ;-)

  @jendonoghue, you can change the free address at any moment:

  https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/

  You can also upgrade and register a custom domain so that the .wordpress.com part will not be visible anymore.
