WordPress 8.0.0 update crashing on mac mini 2
-
Mac mini 2 (2023) Ventura 13.4.1
I’m currently running version 7.2.0 and when I start the app I receive a prompt asking if I want to update to 8.0.0. However after updating, the app immediately crashes. I’ve tried rebooting and reinstalling to no effect. I’ve successfully reverted back to 7.2.0
-
I’ve tried the update on my Intel MacBook Air and the update has worked fine. Seems the problem is confined to Apple silicon.
-
Thanks for letting us know about this situation. I haven’t seen any other reports but am going to ask my colleagues and see if I can find any help. We will report back here.
-
For clarification, have you already tried to completely delete the app and install it brand new?
-
Yes I uninstalled it completely and downloaded again from the website expecting version 8.0.0. but it was the old version again. So installed 7.2 again and upgraded when prompted and it crashed again. Couldn’t see where to download the new version.
-
You can download version 8.0.0 of the software by visiting this link: https://apps.wordpress.com/desktop/
One of our colleagues encountered a similar issue and they suggest trying a fresh installation instead of upgrading from 7.2 to 8.0.0. This might help resolve the problem.
Please feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance or if you encounter any more trouble. We’re here to help!

No luck I’m afraid. I completely uninstalled 7.2. Rebooted, downloaded 8.0.0 and installed it but crashes immediately as before. Is the generated crash report any help?
-
Hi there, yes if you are able to share that it would be great. We’re still not sure as to what is causing the issue so that extra info may help. Thanks!
-
There 18 pages of the apple crash report which Ive saved as a pdf – how should I send it?
-
You can upload the PDF to the media library on your site, and we will be able to access it.
Also can Can you visit this page and and copy down the OS version number.?
https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/what-operating-system-do-i-have
This will give us some extra troubleshooting info about your computer to help us troubleshoot. Also to confirm. this is an issue only on Apple silicon (on your Mac Mini) but not an issue on your Intel-powered machine, yes? Thanks!
-
I can confirm that the intel version is running fine. I’ve also uploaded the pdf
I’ve followed the link and it tells me I’m running Catalina 10.15
However its running Ventura 13.4.1

Thanks we’ve passed that info on to our team so they can investigate. For now if you are able to revert to 7.2 (I believe you mentioned you are able to do this previously) it will allow you to continue to use the app. You can also use WordPress.com in the browser as a workaround as well.
We do not have an estimate on when this will be addressed, but are happy to update you here as soon as we know more.
Thanks for your patience!

Hello,
Just wanted to add that I’ve got the same issue with v8.0.0 on my M2 Air MacBook Pro. I can provide the logs if needed, but I guess they probably are same age the ones you already have.

Hi @pasgarcia
Thanks for letting us know. I’ve added that to our report so our developers can investigate it further.
Thanks!

Hello, same problem. The app v8.0.0 crash on my Mac Studio Max M1 (OS Monterey v12.6.7).
(I was able to revert to a save version v7.2.0) -
Dear Sirs,
I have pretty much the same problem. Yesterday, I updated my WP app to your prompted new 8.0 version. Everything ran smoothly, the app was updated seemingly successfully – but instead of opening the updated application I got the message that WP.com ran into an error.
A rather long list of errors began with:
… … AppDataLocalProgramsWordPress.comresourcesappno…keytar.node is not a valid Win32 application. – And so on. A lot of “nodes” in the report.
After a few more tries I uninstalled the “updated” app entirely and installed the previous one (with wordpress.com-win32-setup-7.1.0.exe).
Today, I tried the same thing again – and there was the same result: another crash. Luckily, I was able to successfully revert back to 7.1.0 once again.
I am pretty surprised. (And rather disappointed, since I have just renewed my domain at WordPress.com and my Word Press Personal for another year.) I certainly do not intend to update to your 8.0 version any time soon.
Thanks for your reply – and a hopeful solution!

Thanks for sharing your experiences, folks! This issue is impacting all Apple Silicon computers.
Good news – our developers have a fix in the works; it’s currently in the review process, so this is on it’s way toward a resolution here soon!
In the meantime, reverting back to the 7.2.0 app is the best workaround at the moment. We’ll update this thread as soon as that solution is in place!

Glad to hear that a fix is in the process. In the meantime, how do I downgrade to 7.2.0?
