WordPress Action Bar

The action bar has stopped appearing on my site so other bloggers are no longer able to follow me using it. How can I add the action bar back to my site?

My site is: http://www.labeillefrancaise.net and it contains published posts.

I recently made some changes to enable commenting on my blog posts. As I recall, these are the changes I made:

Settings – Discussion – Other Comment Settings:
    – unchecked ‘Users must be registered and logged in to comment’
    – unchecked ‘Automatically close comments on articles older than 28 days

  • Hi –

I can see there’s a follow option via email on the site.

labeillefrancaise.net is not on the WordPress.com service, this is why folks don’t see the follow option you’ve mentioned.

In order to integrate the site with Reader you need to add the Jetpack plugin to the site.

    Jetpack

Then folks can follow your site via Reader. It will publish your posts there as well and make the content more discoverable for folks with similar interests and tag searches.

The site is running the stand alone WordPress installation and is hosted at BlueHost. This page outlines the differences between the WordPress installation and WordPress.com:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    I see. That’s clear, thanks!

I already have Jetpack installed. Under the Subscriptions settings section I have the ‘Show a “follow blog” option in the comment form’ option turned on. Then the option ‘Notify me of new posts via email’ appears once I click on the Comments box. Is this how WordPress users can subscribe?

  • Hi there,

Yes, that’s one way your visitors can subscribe to your site. The other option is to add the Blog Subscriptions widget. Here’s how to set that up:

    Jetpack

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

    Thanks!

I’m already using a Constant Contact email subscription widget so it seems I would have duplication by adding the Jetpack widget. Is this the case or is the Jetpack one specifically for WordPress users?

  • The Jetpack widget is an email subscription widget, so can be used by WordPress.com and non-WordPress.com subscribers. So in that regard Constant Contact will cause duplication. I wouldn’t recommend using both.

If I can punt Jetpack for a moment, though… :)

With the Jetpack widget any WordPress.com users who subscribe should automatically see your posts in the Reader as well, though, and you can add a Reader follow button using a widget as well:

    Follow Button Creation

I don’t know how Constant Contact stores followers – in your site’s database or on an external server – but with the Jetpack follow options those followers are stored in our system, and subscription emails are sent from our servers, not your site’s. So should something go wrong with your site, your followers will still be safe with us, and Jetpack even allows you to move the followers to a different Jetpack site with a single click.

So if I had to choose between the two, I’d go with Jetpack. But you know best what your needs are, and if Constant Contact is a better fit for you, by all means keep using it. In that case, perhaps add the Reader follow button to your site for WordPress.com users, but don’t add the Jetpack email subscription widget if you already have Constant Contact active.
