WordPress and domain names

  I already have an active website hosted by another company. I want to switch to WordPress, but I cannot afford to have my website down for weeks. I do have a domain name I am not using. If I use that domain name to set up my website can I change it later to the domain that I am using on my active website?

  You most definitely can! For both domains, all you need to do is map the domain over to us. Our support page provides instructions on how to set that up:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

  Once you are ready to use the preferred domain, you can make that domain the primary domain and either keep the old domain (to forward to the primary domain) or deactivate the mapping subscription.
