WordPress and "Theme by" footer

  What steps do I need to take to remove the messages on the footer which advertise WordPress and the theme creator?

  Do I need to do the Custom Design upgrade?

  Or could I purchase a premium theme?

  Or do I need to upgrade to pro?

  Do not remove the credit links etc. unless you wish to have your blog suspended. There is no upgrade you can purchase that allows you to remove footer credit links, etc.

  May I remove credit links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com’, theme, font, or toolbar links?
  All WordPress.com bloggers are required to maintain the credit links, even our VIP bloggers. Please do not hide the footer credits or the toolbar with CSS after purchasing a Custom Design upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

  How about the “theme by” credit?

  I’m noticing some blogs don’t have this showing.
