wordpress as a website….
-
I am NOT computer savvy but have taken on the task of trying to create a website for a small business where I work. Is there a way to get rid of the “following” and “new post” items at the top of the page?
Also, how do I set it up so the public can view the site but those who wish to order must sign in?
Thanks :)The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.com cannot be used as an e commerce site. There is no way to set up a shopping cart; the only button we can use is a simple PayPal button.

You cannot set up a separate sign-in section for orders. And unless you are making the products yourself, you are in danger of being suspended for violation of the ToS.Please read the Terms of Service you agreed to when you opened your account:

The bold part here may apply to your potential blog:the Content is not spam, is not machine- or randomly-generated, and does not contain unethical or unwanted commercial content designed to drive traffic to third party sites or boost the search engine rankings of third party sites, or to further unlawful acts (such as phishing) or mislead recipients as to the source of the material (such as spoofing);
It’s not that you cannot have a blog about your business, talking about your services, news relevant to customers, clients, the general public, tips about how to use a particular product, and so on. But the main purpose of the blog is not to drive traffic to a third party site.

my understanding was that wordpress could be used to create a site to be hosted somewhere? that’s even the way it appears when I read the literature about using wordpress to create a website……is this not correct?

There are two very different and complete separate kinds of WordPress.
This entry describes the differences http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ -
complete separate = completely separate
