My very best advice is to head on over to wordpress.ORG. Please see this entry so I don’t have to type an bunch of stuff that’s alreay found in it >

That being said, we can only use the themes located here > Appearance > Themes on wordpress.COM blogs. You can use Sandbox to create a dkin but that about it when it comes to using a seign you made it’s a no go.

If you remain at wordpress.COM and have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

I got my site up and running on WordPress.com. I paid for the CSS upgrade and domain name mapping. It looks just like a professionally hosted site. WordPress.com went with me from 100 page views a month to the current traffic level of 700 page views a day.

Now I’m moving to my own server using WordPress.ORG. But if you just want to run a basic information/news site with the standard WordPress themes, you can get everything you need from WordPress.COM.
