wordpress audio player
-
Sorry – I know this has been extensively dealt with in these forums, but none of the responses makes any sense to me.
I have several mp3 audio files on my radio show blog http://tuesdaybreakfast.wordpress.com/ which work fine, but only play in the listener’s computer (they download and then play).
I know there is a way of embedding a player on the page, but can’t understand how. Help!
I’m not dim, but a newby to this. I have purchased the extra space to house my audio files in the WordPress media library.
Cheers!

You put this into the Visual editor for your Welcome link (as an example):
[audio http://tuesdaybreakfast.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/welcome.mp3]That brings up the player.

Thanks for your quick reply, Vivian – I think I’ve followed your instructions, but although I can see a player on the page, it produces an arror message, and the link now looks horrible – what have I done wrong?? The page is here: http://tuesdaybreakfast.wordpress.com/listen-again/
Cheers

Well when I try to open this http://tuesdaybreakfast.files.wordpress.com/2008-12-12/welcome.mp3 I get a file not found error. Are you sure that is the proper link?
As for the rest of it “looking horrible” it seems that you have some extraneous code in there that you didn’t take out.

Thanks, Vivian _I’ve been away from the computer for a day or so – yes, you’re right – with that link you do get an error message; my ‘old’ links (the ones that you have to download)work perfectly. I don’t know which is the ‘extraneous code’!!
I’ll put the link we were playing wth back to how it was for the present.
cheers!

the correct link to that audio file, by the way, is this: http://tuesdaybreakfast.wordpress.com/files/2008/12/welcome.mp3 – so do I just put this
[audio http://tuesdaybreakfast.wordpress.com/files/2008/12/welcome.mp3%5D ? should there be a colon after the ‘audio’ ? and how do I make it look just like a link you can click without showing all that syntax? (I said I was new to this) (But I am trying) (and my radio show’s a good one)
G -
Yes, that is all you do. No colon. The audio player will NEVER show up as a link; it shows up as a band that looks like the one here:

If you want the file to be downloadable as well, just upload the MP3 and Insert to Post. To make the audio player as well you have to put it in the code above, as you’ve said.

Thanks for chipping in, Raincoaster – your cheerful music works perfectly, with the little player and all – I just can’t manage to do it, somehow. If I copy-and-paste in this : [audio http://tuesdaybreakfast.wordpress.com/files/2008/12/welcome.mp3%5D for example – including the square brackets (should they be there?)
a) it produces an error message and
b) it shows the URl line of text (or part of it). Could you explain exactly what to do – I click the ‘add audio’ button, then go to the media library to find the file. Presumably I click ‘show’. This displays the ‘link URL’ What do I do from there? Am I being dim or is it a bit unobvious?
thanks for your time

Yes, the square brackets should be there. Usually you get infinite buffering or an error message if the link you put in is “live” ie underlined in the edit view and active. Break that link with the Unlink icon.
I’m going to try using that URL on the blog I showed you. Will report back on if it works.
Note you may have to do this in the Code view, the HTML editor. Some people have reported that they have to do that; I think it’s theme related.
Once you have the URL of the audio file, you can copy it, hit Insert into Post so it’s downloadable, then go to your post and add [audio URL]. That’s SUPPOSED to work. Like I said, you may have to do it in the code editor instead of the visual one with the icons.

Works just fine:

And you’re right, it’s a pretty snazzy program!

Brilliant!!
At last, an answer that makes sense to a newby and actually works…
Thanks a million, Raincoaster. This procedure isn’t written up anywhere, you know – I’ve looked extensively on the forums and help pages and none of what you’ve showed me is there. I’ll give you a mention on Tuesday’s show. Off now to convert all the audio files on the blog…

Actually, the FAQ doesn’t mention breaking the link. It’s easily the biggest problem reported.

-
Yes – I’d read that FAQ but couldn’t make it work as the URL link was producing the error message. Sometimes FAQs make sense to people who already know how to do them…
Thanks to Vivian and raincoaster for your help – I’ve got it now!
Cheers
