wordpress banner when viewing site

    Hi WordPress Team,

I’m considering purchasing only a domain for my website and wanted to know if this will also remove the WordPress banner from my site. Will the banner still be visible even if I buy my own domain, or will it be removed?

    Thank you for your assistance!

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No, buying only a domain name will not remove the banner and other ads from appearing on your WordPress.com website.

To do that, you need to buy an annual upgrade plan, like the Personal/Starter plan, which will not only remove the advertising, but also include domain registration for one year.

Click the “Learn more” link for more information.

Post back here if you have questions.

But why would we want to pay for an upgrade to a £3/month blog when we’re just writing about our hobby for our friends and not a commercial site earning money? I think it’s very sharp practice defacing our sites like this in the hope we’ll pay out – rather like blackmail!

When we signed up for a free WordPress.com website, we also agreed to allow WordPress.com to display ads on it to help offset their costs of providing us with a free website. You can continue to publish on a free website for as long as you want.

Upgrading to the Starter plan also provides additional features beyond removing the advertising. Frankly, I spend more than £3/month on coffee and my other hobbies combined.

I don’t mind ads etc. appearing during scrolling through a post but this banner is (obviously deliberately) blocking most of my screen so I can only see a little bit of what I’m reading all the time. As my laptop is a wide-screen one, there is very little depth to a view. As there are various essential bars along the top for things which I use online, I can barely see anything else now! I’m sure it will be permanent.

Most of the ‘features’ I’m sure I’d never use anyway – my blog is extremely basic as it is just words and photos about mountains.

I am a pensioner and don’t have a lot of money – I’m not going to be paying anything per month for doing anything online – it already costs me a fortune just to be online and there doesn’t seem to be a way to get it cheaper.

@mountaincoward That banner shouldn’t be blocking anything and if it is, that needs support help. For that I’d suggest opening a new forum thread with a screenshot of what you see. Here’s how to add a screenshot https://wordpress.com/support/make-a-screenshot/

FWIW, viewing your site in Firefox on Win10Pro on my PC, it’s sitting above your theme’s header and isn’t blocking viewing your content. My display is 2560×1440.

And I know this will be an unpopular reply, but have you thought about switching to a different theme? Freshy has been retired longer than I have and you can switch to a different Classic theme with a sidebar rather than the newer Block themes. Again, if you want more help with that, please open a new forum thread. Thanks.

I tried accessing my blog on Chrome instead of AVG Browser and the result was the same but I noticed I had Chrome on 110% size and the AVG one on 125% size to make it easier for me to read. Obviously when I use 110% the banner is smaller and I can see more of my content but it’s not really a comfortable size for me to read for a long time.

I tried lots of other themes when I started my blog and didn’t really like any of the others. I have to say I really like the way my blog looks as it is.

Thanks for your help though – especially with the links. I’ve started a support thread…

    :-)
