WordPress behaving really weird, lots of problems suddenly.

  • Unknown's avatar

Suddenly my blog’s behaving really weirdly.

    1. I type the first 2 letters of the first word in a post, say “The”, then when I try to type the “e” it wont type first time then the second time I try to type the “e” the “Th” jumps to the middele of the page, still without the “e”.

    2. If I try to paste in several lines at once it puts them all in one line so most of it’s hidden till I scroll right along the line. Before it wrapped lines around so I could always see all of the post.

    3. When I preview the post the font has changed from the font the rest of my posts have been in to a really ugly font.

    4. Suddenly halfway through doing a post what I’ve written disappears & is replaced by the an image of the whole wordpress web page I’m on removing everything I’ve typed. Inside the place in the image where I’m supposed to type is another image of the web page. Ad infinitum.

    5. Before when I put images on the right hand side of the page I could write next to them. Now when I do the same writing next to them pushes the pic down the page.

    6. I keep on getting an “Are you sure you want to leave this page?” popup midway through typing something.

That’s all the problems I can remember at the moment. I’m using a Mac running 10.7.2 & have tried both Safari & Raven web browsers.

Please help I’m tearing my hair out & really need to get a post up.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

And now WordPress has just fucking deleted about the last 10 posts I’ve done. I want to cry. Honestly WTF?

And why is none of the WordPress staff available when I really need them? On the support page it just says they’re on some meeting or course for the whole week so sod us. This is an appalling way to treat people who are, in effect, your customers. I’ve spent hours doing my blog to have lot’s of my posts totally deleted is seriously galling.

I don’t want to have to change to a different blog host as I’ve spent so long setting everything up & until today I’ve had no problems but frankly if you (WordPress) just turn round & say “fuck you, we’ve got far more important things to do than listen to your problems & help you” then it looks like I’ve no option.

I use Tumblr for my personal blog but thought for the society I help run I’d like something more professional like WordPress. What a fool I was. Professional my arse. Tumblr are great with support, always getting back to you on the same day. It’s things like support that make the difference between a good & bad company.

I am really upset & really angry & if any of the WordPress team read this in 5 days time (if any of you every stoop so low as to offer help to forum users) when you’re off whatever’s so important we can’t contact you this week then I’d really like some help please.

  • What you’re describing sounds like classic browser issues. You might want to try clearing your cache and cookies: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

If that doesn’t make a difference, please try a different browser (like Firefox) to rule out a browser-specific issue: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ Raven is nice, but not necessarily a standard browser that you’d want to use for comparison.

As for the deletions, our logs report that your own user account trashed 38 posts 22 minutes ago and permanently deleted 7 of them 1 minute ago.

If you didn’t do this, I recommend changing your password ASAP. You can also restore trashed posts via the Trash sub-section in the Posts section of your Dashboard.

Hey, guess what? Everything seems to be working fine in Firefox! Also found out the post’s that’d had been deleted had only been removed from public view & could be restored. Will def change password though – I had given the login details to a couple of other people, one to check the posts on his iphone before I publish them. It’s entirely possible he accidentally f***ed up.

Resetting Safari didn’t help matters, all the problems still existed there so I guess I’m going to have to keep Firefox around. Is Safari often a problem for WordPress?

Thanks for your help anyway. Do you work for WordPress & so was the support page in error when it said you were all otherwise engaged? If so I apologise for my tirade. Like I said, I was a bit upset.

  • Safari shouldn’t be a problem, it’s what I use anyway. Are you running any extensions, if so would you mind disabling those?

Instead of giving your password to other folks, you may want to consider adding them as users: http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

I do work for Automattic (in this case WordPress.com), and we are doing our company meetup this week, but most of us are still checking in infrequently.

Tried disabling extensions, still no joy. I also had Glims & the Omnibar SIMBL plugin installed, both of which I uninstalled completely, restarted my machine & still encounter the same problems.

Checking on the Installed plugins Safari page I have these plugins installed too: flip4mac,
logmein,
 quicktime,
silverlight &
speed download
but as none of these have been updated recently I can’t imagine these are the source of my problems, especially as all my other blogs have been done using Safari. Plus these are all pretty popular plugins so I guess other people would’ve reported problems if they were the responsible.

  • Yeah, I those would probably be reported by more folks.

Just in case, would you mind disabling them?

@guymanchester: I don’t work for WP, and I’ve got two remarks:

    a) As the Support contact page says, you can always visit the forums for help from experienced volunteers (as well as staff, as you saw). Even when Support is open, forum replies come a lot faster than replies to Support tickets.

    b) You’re overlooking a tiny detail: WordPress.com is a free service. You pay nothing, so you’re a user, not a “customer”, and you cannot expect or demand constant and immediate staff attention.

Hi – my sidebar has suddenly gone missing and is down in the footer. It is programmed correctly in the dashboard – widget section but shows up in the wrong place on the front page. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

staff-blorbo Tried removing those plugins & restarting Safari, same problems. I also tried going into the guest account & most of the problems don’t exist there. Which is a bit strange. There’s obviously something interfering with how my posts & compose panels are rendering in Safari on my main account but I can’t imagine what if it isn’t a plugin or extension.

@panaghiotisadam I’ve probably been spoilt by other “free” services where the providers don’t offer pretty speedy assistance.

@panaghiotisadam Also, very few “free” services are genuinely free, run purely by volunteers or have all their costs met by some altruistic donor who can cover wages, site hosting fee’s etc. I didn’t realise WordPress was such. I guess those ads I’ve seen must be a figment of my imagination.

    @marilyngardner
Please start a new thread with your question. Your topic is not related to the OP’s problem. Starting a new thread will make it much easier for another volunteer to find your question.
in the meantime, take a look at this:

    from: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/sidebar-widgets-move-to-bottom-of-page-on-posts?replies=13#post-633626

This is most often caused by an open HTML tag in one of your posts.

Go to settings > writing and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then click “save changes.”

Now, starting with your latest post, open it in the editor, switch from the visual tab to the HTML tab (waiting for the page to refresh) and then switch back to the visual tag (again waiting for it to refresh), and then click “update post.” Check your blog and if it is back to normal, you are golden. If not, open the next post and do the same thing till it goes back to normal.

  • @guymanchester This is very strange, I’m unable to duplicate it myself under your account.

Do you have access to another computer with Safari that you could check from?

“Warning: We have a concern about some of the content on your blog. Please click here to contact us as soon as possible to resolve the issue and re-enable posting.”

repeating headmessage at the blog…anybody knowing about that? Alread sent twice a report but no answer up to now…. ;-/

@chiacchierareincucinadiliz: Hi. This is between you and WordPress.com and they will not discuss this issue on these forums in public. Please wait for staff to respond.

    @chiacchierareincucinadiliz

All you can do right now is to check your email spam/junk folder and be patient.
We volunteers have no authority to determine whether a blog is in compliance with TOS. And staff does not discuss such issues in these public forums.

Note that your problem is not related to the questions the OP has. Please do not post again about this issue: Contact staff as directed, then wait.

    thanks for Your advice… ;-)

  • Unknown's avatar

    you are welcome…

  • Unknown's avatar

@guymanchester: How WP is run and how they make profit is irrelevant. The point is how much you pay them. Check “customer” in a dictionary please.

The only problem that persists when I log into the guest account & use Safari to do a blog is that I can’t put information next to the picture. If your in my account I want to create something like the draft for Archive 2003 events. There the words are alongside the picture. In the guest account the words appear above it. Other than that none of the other problems, which are much more major, exist. I’ve had problems with the text side (rather than code side) of the input area for some time, now I think about it. It always fills up the page with a copy of the same page until I click over to ‘code’. I’ve had the weird font before too but relaunching Safari’s always worked before. I might try completely uninstalling/reinstalling Safari later – I’m away from my machine at the mo.

    Thanks for your help anyway.

Thanks much @1Tess – that worked for me. Sorry I used the wrong thread.
