WordPress Blog hosting transfer
-
Hello there,
I have a wordpress.com account associated to the wordpress blog followthesun.pt.
Followthesun.pt however is hosted on Webfaction and I’d like to change that. I noticed that I could select here in my wordpress.com account account the option to upgrade to a Personal Plan, which seems ideal to me, but I could not understand what this upgrade will do exactly.
If I upgrade the wordpress plan of the followthesun.pt blog, will the hosting of this blog be transfered to wordpress.com?
If YES, will all the features be kept? Thanks.
Regards,

Good Morning –
Yes :) This is a very common question. Go ahead and build your new site on WordPress.com. Import your content, customize the theme, get it all ready to launch.
Keeping the new site private will help prevent any SEO confusion since you’re going to have the same content on two different addresses.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/Once ready, the domain can get connected with one of our plans. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
There’s 2 ways to connect the domain. Either will work fine.
1. Mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
2. Transfer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/Write back with more questions :)

Hello lizkarkoski,
Thank you very much for your reply but either I was not clear in my question or I did not fully understand your answer.
My question is – is I buy a plan in WordPress.com for a website using WordPress in an external hoster does the website gets transferred for WordPress.com automatically?
You answer starts with “Yes”, but them along your explanation you mention that I would need to import my content to WordPress.com, customize the theme, etc etc. This means that the website does not get transferred automatically, right?
What I mean by “transfer”is that when I loggin in wordpress.com with my username and password I can see in my account that I am “following” the website followthesun.pt. In here I also have the chance to purchase a plan for this website. What is not clear to me is what that purchase mean since the website is hosted in an external third party.
Thanks.
Best regards,

You cannot buy a WordPress.com plan for a WordPress website hosted somewhere else, no. WordPress.com plans can only be bought for a site hosted with us, so if you want to have your site with us instead of your current host, you’ll need to migrate it here first.
First create a new WordPress.com site if you don’t have one already. Then export the content from the existing WordPress site to the WordPress.com site as explained here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
Then you’ll buy the upgrade for the WordPress.com site.

The plan you see there is for the Jetpack plugin that connects your site to WordPress.com. While WordPress.com plans unlock extra features for a WordPress.com site, a Jetpack plan enables the advanced security and backup features included in that plugin.
Buying that plan will not transfer anything to WordPress.com – your site will remain exactly as it is, at your current host. But the Jetpack features of the plan you choose will be enabled.
