WordPress book by Andy Williams

    Hi all

Not sure if I am allowed to link, but there is a book by Dr. Andy Williams that has a lot of 4 or 5 star ratings. Would you guys recommend buying this book? I am very new to wordpress and I believe this book will be of a lot of help.

Do you guys think it is wise to buy a book to learn about wordpress? Or just forget it?

My apologies – I am uncertain how to edit my previous post.

If you guys recommend a book from which to learn WordPress, which would it be? I can see there are many books out there that aim to teach how to use wordpress

Books are so 20th Century. The Internet is here now and that’s where you find up-to-date stuff.

I see you’ve started a new thread. Did you read the replies to your earlier thread? That “WordPress for beginners” book is all about WordPress.org 3.9 and unless it has been updated in the last few months will be out of date as WordPress.org is now up to version 4.7. That book will only give you incorrect information if you continue using WordPress.com (here).

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Thank you the magicrobot.

Yes I have read the reply to the other thread. You have a really great point, the current version of WP is 4.7 and those books may be a little late, focusing on the previous versions.

So I guess I will be able to find information on the internet? Its true I am going through a lot of things and this is taking a lot of my time too, all just to find a good book/magazine.

I still don’t know if you’re posting in the right forums. Are you wanting to learn about WordPress.com (here) where @JustJennifer has already given you loads of links to get you going or WordPress.org (not here) in which case you’re asking in the wrong place ??

    Hi again,

If you have questions about references for learning and using the standalone WP (org) software, you would probably do better to look at the site for standalone WP (org) or asking in the forums there. You’ll find information including the CODEX for learning about using WordPress.org here: https://wordpress.org/

WordPressdotcom (where we are) and standalone WP (org) are separate entities in spite of the name. You can learn more about that in this support doc: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Good luck and best wishes.

Yes, I thank you both for your help. I do understand the difference between com and org. My question is just, regardless of com or org, is it worth buying a book/magazine to teach me about wordpress? Or just ignore that since I can get information on the internet anyway?

If you feel more comfortable with a book, then buy a book. However, no book completely covers either WordPressdotcom or standalone WordPress because updates to both happen more frequently than books are published.

You can always find the latest, most up-to-date information on using each at:
    WordPress.org https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
    WordPress.com https://en.support.wordpress.com

In this thread, https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/should-i-buy-a-magazine-about-learning-to-wordpress?replies=6#post-2909675 both themagicrobot and I pointed you to additional resources for getting started and getting help on WordPressdotcom.

If you feel you need a more structured method of learning WordPressdotcom, in January I pointed you to Blogging U https://dailypost.wordpress.com/blogging-university/

For standalone WordPress.org there are a number of online learning courses and websites, but the only one I am familiar with and can recommend is the one on Lynda.com (No Affiliation, Yada Yada)

So this may not have directly answered your question about whether it is worthwhile buying a book or magazine to learn WordPress, I hope the above will further help you make an informed decision.

    All the best
