WordPress Business Trial and Templates

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am a designer who was hired to create a website for a firm. I suggested wordpress to my client since they intend to modify and update it later on. Since they don’t know wordpress they would like to see the product before they pay for all fees. Is there a possibility where I can get access to all features as a trial and build the website for their reference? After they are satisfied with the result it could be converted into a full business plan. Or what would be the best option for me to build their website without actually asking for their credit card information? Many thanks

    Hi there
WordPress does not offer “trial periods”. But they do offer a 30 day refund policy.

    Hope that helps

Hi Dave, thanks for your answer.
Unfortunately that would still require that either my clients have to create an account or I have to ask them for their credit card information. Both options are not very professional. It’s unfortunate that a trial option doesn’t exist.

Hi there, I’ve tagged this thread for Staff to note your feedback.

  • Hi –

Thanks for the tag, y’all :)

As Dave mentioned, we do not offer a free trial period for upgraded plans but there is a full refund window of 30 days.

You do not need upgrades to create a site on WordPress.com, you can create a test site for them absolutely for free with a free .wordpress.com site address. All your work would stay the same if you later upgraded to a plan with a custom domain.

    Hi Liz,

thank you for the fast reply. I am aware that an upgrade would be possible but from my understanding the free plan is limited to free templates, correct? I wouldn’t be able to build the website I would want to due to the plan’s limitations, like customization etc.

    Just thinking out loud.

If you want to build a site for them, you don’t have to spring for the full Business plan right away. The Premium plan upgrade gives you access to all Premium themes and CSS editing at 1/3 the cost of the Business plan. https://wordpress.com/pricing/ The only exception is if you really need the extra available Business only tools right from the get-go, like Google Analytics and the SEO tools.

Are you and your clients aware that you can have your clients register an account so they actually own their sites and you don’t?

I’ve been here for 11 years and my feedback based on the times I have seen “clients” complain that their “developers” own their sites and won’t let them have access, I would never, ever in a million years allow anyone else to register my sites and thereby have ownership of my sites.

Here at wordpress.COM a turn key multi-user platform blogging platform designed for those who do not code, and who do not require paid “developers” to set up off the help themes as Staff provide all CSS editing assistance, companies, groups and organizations of any kind do not own blogs.

Every WordPress.COM blog has a sole owner. It is the person with the WordPress.COM username account who registered the blog under that username account and a single associated email address, and who is the original Admin of the blogs registered under that username account.

The owner of the site can transfer the site (and/or upgrades) to another account by adding another username account as an Admin. https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator
Transferring a Blog to Another WordPress.com User or Account https://en.support.wordpress.com/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/
    Transferring upgrades https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#transferring-upgrades
    Change Credit Card Details
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-credit-card-details/

I’m sure you can tell by my feedback that what I think is “unfortunate” is that “clients” don’t know they do not need “developers” here at all, and the last thing they want or need is to not be the actually “owners” of their sites.

Please make sure my feedback is taken into consideration as well. Those who are into the wordpress.COM marketing end of things need to note what I said. The biggest selling point for blogging here at wordpress.COM and purchasing wordpress.COM upgrades is that one does not need a developer at all.

Edit: to set up off the shelf themes …

Yes, tt. For those who have the time and desire to learn how to use the WordPressdotcom platform, they don’t need to hire anyone else at all.

    Hi timethief,

thank you for the reply. Some of your links might help.
Regarding your comments – for some clients that might be true but in the end the simple truth is that most of the people I work with might know how to browse, write an email and maybe a word document. The wordpress platform would be way too complicated for them and also take too much time. Additionally they don’t hire me for a simple website but a complete marketing package.
Wordpress is a good idea for people who want to save money but not for someone who doesn’t want to spend the time. The reason I use wordpress is so they can update it later by themselves as you mentioned and I will still have to write a step-by-step explanation on how to do so. That’s my reality!

  • Good Morning –

Regarding the plans: You can still purchase a premium theme with a free plan if you want. There’s a thirty day refund window on premium themes as well. There are some limitations with the customization as mentioned. Our free themes are all mobile and device responsive.

What features do you want for the site?

The reason I use wordpress is so they can update it later by themselves as you mentioned and I will still have to write a step-by-step explanation on how to do so. That’s my reality!

I just want to point out that we have dozens of public support guides and tutorials that can walk users through step-by-step with the most common questions for WordPress.com. You can always link clients to these as well.

    @nibeworks

I hope you clearly instruct your clients that when you register their sites under your username account they do not own the site. As it’s unlikely that they will all be your immediate kin, if something terrible happens to you, heaven forbid, then they will be unable to produce the required documentation.

If you have a row with them you have the ability to delete all content on their site and even the URL as you will be the site’s actual owner. Even if you were in an accident, heaven forbid, and were hospitalized for any period of time access issues and inability to renew domain upgrades, etc. re: your ownership of their sites could arise.

This site ownership by a developer does not sit well with me and I explained why above. I am concerned that your clients may not even be aware that they do not own their sites and you do.
