WordPress can only accept ‘square’ images?
-
I have an image that is oval. No matter how I crop or size or change this in my image software (GIMP), WordPress imports it as a evenly-sided (square) image that cuts off the ends of the oval. I’ve tried everything I can think of prior to importing, from reducing the image size to creating a narrow square frame and background for the image and all WordPress picks up is the main oval image, background is ignored. Is there something I’m missing, or do all images have to be square? And if so, how can I create a square element that WordPress accepts, yet maintain the oval shape of the main image?

All images have to be rectangular. I don’t even know if you could do something with transparency in the background, or setting it the same colour as the rest of the blog.

You can do it.
Here’s one way to fit none-rectangular images into a rectangle that WP will accept.
I did the three separate images in picnik, and then used Photoshop Elements to put them on a background. As I recall, you also can create a background with Photofiltre. Photofiltre is free, as is picnik basic. You can find both programs easily with a google search.

The “canvas” size has to extend out to or past the edges of the oval both horizontally and vertically. If it doesn’t then anything outside the “canvas” (on the art board) will not appear in the image when saved and put onto the web.
