WordPress.com blog gone

  • Unknown's avatar

I had a wordpress.com blog that I pointed the feed to my regular site. I started this before my current site above and directed the feed there. I changed hosts and somehow it’s lost and I can’t access it at all now. I’m only guessing that’s when it happened. Both feeds say they’re visible, but I only get 404 errors when I try and access any of the posts, or the back end.

    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

What’s the address of both the WordPress.com blog and your regular site?

Thanks for that. Your site is not hosted with WordPress.com but instead a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org ) but hosted elsewhere.

We cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. But, I can get you pointed in the right direction.

If you changed hosts and did not download a complete backup of your old site and uploaded it at your new hosting, those files are likely lost.

You would need to reach out to your prior hosting provider and hopefully they still have a backup of your site files they could restore.

If you still have trouble, please reach out to the WordPress community for guidance:

I know my site is not hosted on WP.com, but my first blog was/is. I started it long before my current site, and had to log in on another dashboard to write posts. It’s that dashboard that I no longer can access. I got tired of having 2 dashboards, so I called the old one “Blog Archives” and routed the feed there as I started blogging on the self-hosted site. I’m not sure when it broke, I didn’t visit it frequently, but when I went to look at a post from that blog, the whole thing was gone. I should be able to sign in with (email visible only to moderators and staff), which had this username, but WP says that account doesn’t exist.

  • We definitely do not have an account under that email address.

What, specifically, is the URL of the “Blog Archives” site you’re trying to access?

The only link I have is what I posted above: http://www.alicearlene.com/home/blog-2/feed/

It’s the link that I’ve used on various platforms for the feed. It’s all I have since everything else gives a 404

Would you have one under (email visible only to moderators and staff)? It’s the only other email address I had when I started that blog. I don’t have access to it, it was with a former internet provider in another state.

  • Ok, the my colleagues were correct.

Your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted elsewhere.

So, you’ll log in to it through https://alicearlene.com/wp-login.php and not through us.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

With that said, if you’d like to manage your WordPress.org site through WordPress.com, that is one of the features of the Jetpack plugin: https://jetpack.com/support/getting-started-with-jetpack/

Please read what I wrote! I had DOT-COM blog separate from my site – that’s the one that’s missing!!! I know they aren’t the same thing and I don’t know what happened, which is why I contacted you in the first place. If you can’t help, then fine, but please don’t dismiss me because you’re not reading what I’ve written above.

The feed URL is what my Amazon author page was pulling the posts from on my DOT-COM blog, as that’s the link that’s listed there. I did that years ago, and don’t remember how it worked. That’s the only place outside of my blog that I know of that had a link to that blog. I’m trying to track down any other place that would have a different link, but have been unsuccessful as yet. Again, if I could find that, I could probably recover it myself.

Also again, the DOT-COM blog predates my current site by years… So, the only 2 email addresses that would have been associated with it would have been (email visible only to moderators and staff) OR (email visible only to moderators and staff).

Again, if you can’t find it or help me, then it is what it is and I’ve lost at least 10 years of posts, but I would really appreciate it if you don’t insult my intelligence by ignoring what I’ve written here and assuming I don’t know what I’m talking about.

I found some of the posts from that blog on my social media profile:
    All look like this: https://alicearlene.com/home/blog-2/*post-name*

I found this link on way back machine to one of the images on that blog: https://web.archive.org/web/20190606144945im_/https://i2.wp.com/alicearlene.com/home/blog-2/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Ask-upload.jpg?w=400&ssl=1

  • Again, I am sorry, we have absolutely no history of alicearlene.com ever being registered or hosted here (and that includes alicearlene.com/home/ and alicearlene.com/home/blog-2/ too).

It is possible it was connected to a WordPress.com account by way of the Jetpack plugin, and managing a WordPress.org site via WordPress.com is one of Jetpack’s features: https://jetpack.com/2016/04/28/benefits-of-jetpack-manage/

Jetpack also provides an image CDN, which explains the wp.com images.

But either way, it is not something we can assist with here.
