wordpress.com site is not displayed

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I have a wordpress.com site and site that uses wordpress but on my own hosting.
At some point, the wordpress.com site stopped being displayed in all my browsers including incognito windows. Other users can see and visit the site.
On my side, the site is displayed as a white page, but the cursor transforms in a little hand above the parts where there is linked content. So, the page is there but it is displayed as a white place.
The problem seems to be with Rebalance theme that I use. Some other themes do display my site in my browsers.
Rebalance is a theme made by Automatic. A wordpress.com site has only plugins and setting authorised by Automatic. Why the two things don’t work together?
    Please help.

  • Hi @nneander, would you send a link to the affected site and let us know what browser you’re seeing this in?

I can see one WordPress.com site on this account that uses Rebalance, and I have tested it in three browsers here. It seems to be working as expected in all three. So a screenshot could be helpful too. Just upload it to https://wordpress.com/media for the free site here, or, upload elsewhere and include a link.

    Hi @supernovia.

Thank you for your answer and your questions.
Sorry for the delay with my answer.

    I am putting below:
    (1) a link to a screenshot of how my pages look in my browsers,

    and

    (2) a link to the Chrome “Inspect” view of my site’s homepage in a Google incognito window.

The problem seems to be with the advertisement links that have “pubmatic” in the urls.

    Thank you for your help.

    @nneander

  • Please go to https://browsehappy.com/ and check on which version of Chrome you are using. If it can be updated please do that and let me know if it makes any difference.

I am using Chrome and the site loads.

    Hi staff-zinnia,

    Thank you for your message.
    1. You posted a screenshot of private posts on my site. Except myself, others are not supposed to have access to those posts. What is going on?
    Please remove the screenshot.

    2. I am using the latest version of Microsoft Edge and try different internet providers. Rebalance and several other themes, for instance, Cubic, do not work.
The problem may be country-specific and, as I wrote in the previous message, is most probably caused by the lines of code that insert advertisement messages.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi @nneander, I’ve removed the screenshot from the message above, sorry for that.

The problem may be country-specific and, as I wrote in the previous message, is most probably caused by the lines of code that insert advertisement messages.

Hm, are you using any adblockers or any other extensions on your browsers?
    Also, where are you located?

    Hi @supernovia and staff-zinnia,

Sorry for the delay with my answer.
I am experiencing problems with my website when I am in Ukraine.
When I used a VPN, it did not help. The site was still not displayed.
Many other themes that use column design, similar to the Rebalance theme, were not displayed correctly.

The good news is that starting yesterday, my site is again displayed normally when I visit it from Ukraine. Both the latest Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and Chrome browser on Windows XP displayed the site normally.
Apparently, something was changed with the injected advertisement code lines and it solved the problem.

As another comment, I’d like to suggest that WordPress organization keeps supporting legacy browsers and operating systems. The latest versions of Windows are unusable. Linux is probably the alternative. But having some basic ways to display and access WordPress sites would be very useful and smart.
It is ok if there is a loss of some features as long as a website is accessible and can not be taken down by an upgrade of a browser.

    Thank you.

  • Thanks for that. Generally the sites themselves will work in various browsers, although a specific feature might not be supported. We usually just ask about that as a troubleshooting step.

I would agree; it sounds like some ad code could have had an issue; possibly just for an ad that shows only there. Was the VPN making it seem you were in the Ukraine, curiously? Also, are you pretty consistently using the same internet connection when you’re there?

No. When I was in Ukraine and trying to access my wordpress.com website with local internet providers, including a mobile operator, it was impossible. When I used a VPN which made it appear that I was in the US, I could not access either.
Many outlets, Microsoft, for instance, push browsers and social networks from the Russian Federation. Namely, Yandex browser and VK social network. Those are blocked in Ukraine due to the current (hybrid) war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Russian Federation occupied Crimea and parts of Eastern Ukraine.
If an ad code uses lines that refer to Yandex, VK or other similar services, it may break the webpage.
There are also web apps used on different websites that make it impossible to display webpages in older browsers. Bluehost that you recommend came up with this type of “innovation” recently.
A simple and accessible from any browser way to display dashboards and website should exist. Otherwise, we may end up with a situation where only the most recent version of Microsoft Edge, Safari and Chrome allows you to surf the web. And you can not access anything unless you buy the latest cr*p from Microsofts, Apples and Googles. That would be a very bad development for the Internet.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Thank you. I was wondering if it might be ad code related to the location too. I’ll pass that along to our team.

From a code maintenance standpoint, it can be very difficult to keep sites working well in (much) older as well as newer versions of browsers at the same time, given that the browsers may well have different standards. But thank you for that feedback; we’ll note it too.

  • One more quick question, when you’re in Ukraine are you able to visit other WordPress.com sites, like this one or WordPress.com itself, or the sites listed at https://wordpress.com/discover-wordpress/?

If you can visit ones that don’t have ads (all paid plans remove ads unless the owner puts them back on to earn money) then that would certainly point to the issue. You could also look at your browser’s console to see if there are errors there. If there are they’ll point to the issue.

  • We’re going to send a follow up email, so you’ll want to watch for that.

    Hi Supernovia,

Thank you for your comments and questions. I have also already received an email from your support team.

To see my site when in Ukraine, I had to change the theme. This is how I was coping with the problem. I would change Rebalance to another theme to make changes and preview a post. And when finished, I’d reactivate Rebalance back.

Many other themes that display three columns like Rebalance would not work on my site either. But themes that display one column would work.

Several days ago, Rebalance started working again, started being displayed normally in all the browsers.

I was able to see other WordPress.com sites while I was having trouble seeing my site with the Rebalance theme.

    Thank you again.

  • Thank you for the additional info, since you’ve already received the email from us, let’s keep in touch there :)
    Thanks!
