wordpress.com update

Hello! I have been WordPress.com for my blog for 5 years now, and have loved it, but in returning after an unexpected absence from the blog, I gotta tell you, this new interface is not user friendly at all. Or for this user, anyway. Last night, I was just trying to add categories to my blog post, and instead have 7 categories boxes I can’t enter anything in or remove the boxes. Also, the right side menu doesn’t appear, and I don’t even know if my featured image would even appear in the damn post (my blog address is foreveryoung80s.wordpress.com). Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  • Hi there,

instead have 7 categories boxes I can’t enter anything in or remove the boxes

Where exactly are you seeing those seven categories? Can you share a screenshot so we can better understand the issue? You can use a service like https://snipboard.io/ to quickly grab a screenshot.

Also, the right side menu doesn’t appear

To reveal that sidebar click on the sprocket wheel on the top right corner. Here’s a screenshot:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

    Hi @fstat,

While we were waiting for your input I have prepared some info for @retrogod1985 too. Let me add something that I think might be useful, please correct me where necessary, ok?

    Hi @retrogod1985,

    Thank you for reaching out.

Changing the Categories has to be done in another place, not the page editing screen, could you please try the options in My Sites >Posts > Categories? More good tips on using categories can be found here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/

What do you mean by Right side menu?
On your website I see menu on the right side, including RECENT POSTS, BLOGS I FOLLOW and so on. You can customize that menu in My Sites > Appearance > Customize > Widgets. More info about using widgets is here:
    https://wordpress.org/support/article/wordpress-widgets/

Featured images can be added in Post/Page editing window, in the right side menu, under “Post” section, Featured Image subsection. More info on that is here: https://wordpress.com/support/featured-images/

We value your feedback, so let us know what do you think.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for all your help! I love using WordPress.com for my blog, but it was just a LOT of changes for a program that was so easy to use before.

And as soon as I can figure out how to paste the screenshot I created to show the multiple categories boxes, I will certainly put that in.

    Hi,

To show an image here in forum, you can use https://snipboard.io/ tool to save your printscreen image on their server and share it here in forum message using this snippet:
    <img src="your-image-address-on-snipboard-goes-here" width="1000px">

“this new interface is not user friendly at all.”

Agreed. It’s like using the real Google AdWords and then being forced to use AdWords Express. Why has it been made worse, this makes no sense.

    Hi @thecharcoalslate,

There are indeed lots of changes happened last years in WordPress. And even more to come, there is a Full Site Editing (FSE) around the corner. The goal is cool, to have all tools in one place, but I believe the road there will be bumpy…

Anyway, could you please create a new chat thread and tell us more about the problems you face? This way we could try to find solutuons faster.
Looking forward to hear from you.

Thanks, I already have. I’ll update it with more details and less panic.

  • Hi there,

Thanks for your screenshot. It’s helpful to see that.

Last night, I was just trying to add categories to my blog post, and instead have 7 categories boxes I can’t enter anything in or remove the boxes.

It looks like you are using the “categories block” which is a block that is intended for displaying a list of all your blog categories. It is not actually intended for adding categories to the post settings themselves.

I can see that the fact that you’ve added a few in a row is causing some kind of odd error, so I have manually removed them on my end, so only your post content remains. If you wish to add categories to your site (as well as a featured image) that can be found in the blog settings sidebar on the right.

This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to find that section and add a new category.
