WordPress.com using an existing domain…vs. WordPress.org
-
I have a domain hosted by HostGator. Can I use WordPress.com to access that domain? Or am I better off using WordPress.org installed by HostGator to my domain there?
-
Hello @brucebbindercom,
I suggest you consider the WordPress.org installation for your site. Keeping in mind your domain being hosted with HostGator, if you choose to come on board with WordPress.com will need a domain mapping upgrade.
You can visit the WordPress.org forums for further support :
https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
Read more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org for a better understanding:
After reading the difference between the two carefully, if you choose to come on board with WordPress.com you can either map or transfer your domain over to WordPress.com by purchasing a suitable upgrade plan.
I hope this was of help.

Hi
You could transfer your domain to WordPress like indicated here https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/#preparing-a-domain-for-transferOr you could map your domain as indicated here https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Keep in mind you´d need a premium account for that.
Last but not least, you can have a free wordpress.com account and connect it to your wordpress.org site using the Jetpack plugin. This allows you to access your site from wordpress.com
I hope this helps!
