WordPress.com vs SiteGround

  my understanding is that wordpress sites need a lot of maintenance, updating wordpress, updating plugins and themes to keep the site up.
  Do you guys do all of that as apposed to if I use wordpress.org with a hosting service?

  If you are hosting my webpage, will it ever go down? or do you guys take care of everything so that it stays up all the time?
  I am comparing what you do as apposed to SiteGround. SiteGround told me they update the plugins and wordpress, but the template is my responsibility to do. If you can comment on the differences between you and them that would be great.
