wordpress, css and themes
-
Hi
My site (thehashmark.wordpress.com) just doesn’t look right because the conventional blog format doesn’t suit out magazine-like approach (although I really like using posts etc., and other benefits you get from blogging). I’ve seen this theme (http://hyalineskies.com/wordpress/gridlock), and I was wondering how I would go about implementing it. Do I have to switch to wordpress.org, or can I use the sandbox theme, or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I don’t really know what I’m doing!
Thanks, duncannichols -
That theme is on a paid host. If you wanted to use it you’d have to switch to a paid host yourself. Hosting at WordPress has it’s limitations. Staying here and (free) blogging the best you can do is pick a template closest to the look you want and work within the limits to customize as best you can.

All WordPress hosted blogs have the url http://blogname.wordpress.com Any theme you see with that type of URL, you can use…..failing that look at other software, other hosts. They offer different templates for their blogs…..those may suit your looks closer.

No, you download the software from WordPress.org and install it on your paid host. It acts just like the Dashboard here, except you have control over the .css and .php files to manually edit, giving the EXACT look you want.
I notice many blogging hosts start at around $6.95 a month and often include WordPress or other blogging software as standard..they also give you a domain name for life included in the price…..to edit that manually, you NEED to be able to interface somehow with the .php and .css files. Paid hosts at the very least allow FTP access to let you upload your altered files.

1) there is a CSS-only version of gridlock here: http://hyalineskies.com/wordpress/gridlock-k2/
you can use it with K2. it’s not exactly the same though.2) you should check out fadtastic. it has a somewhat similar layout.
3) it is possible to use sandbox to build a layout like hyaline skies. it has a different class for different classes, so you can apply a different image or color to posts in different categories, or by different authors. there are also different classes for each post, so you could hide the body of all the posts except the first one if you wanted.
4) send in feedback. they’ve definately considered adding it here.

Hey, I’m the creator of Gridlock and I caught this in my site statistics. If Automattic wants to add Gridlock (and is planning on doing so,) I’d strongly suggest that they 1. wait until Gridlock 1.5 and 2. tell me that it’s under serious consideration so it speeds up my development on it. :)

Best bet would be to submit that via feedback from the dashboard or via email to support at this domain to make sure they’re aware of the issues.
