Some themes are customizable to a certain extent without upgrading.
journalwithgod.com is not a WordPress.com blog; it is a WordPress.ORG blog and you need to be in their forums for answers to questions about that.

There are certain things you can customize on WordPress.com without a premium plan, like changing the background, adding a custom header, and options you find under Appearance > Customize > Theme in some themes.

I’m not sure I understand your question about journalwithgod.com. If you’re looking to map that domain to your WordPress.com site, you can do it following this guide. If you only plan to keep your self-hosted site and don’t plan to have a site here on WordPress.com, then as raincoaster said you can ask questions over at WordPress.org:
