WordPress Desktop App Redirects to Website

I downloaded the WordPress program for Windows 10 and for a month or so. It worked fine and I was able to blog from it.

However now it just redirects to the browser whenever I click on a post to edit it. This behaviour persists after a reinstall. How do I fix this?

  • Hi there,

What site are you trying to use with the desktop app?

If this is for a Jetpack-connected site you have hosted somewhere else, this happens if you have the classic editor plugin installed on your site.

The WordPress desktop app can only create posts inside the WordPress.com editor, which only supports the block editor since we deprecated our built-in version of the classic editor a few weeks ago.

The classic editor plugin, on the other hand, exists only in WP-Admin, which the desktop app does not have access to. So if you try to create a post in the classic editor, the app will send you to WP-Admin in a browser.

The only way to prevent this is to completely deactivate the classic editor plugin.

    Hi Kokkieh,

Thank you for the concise explanation, if I deactivate the classic editor plugin completely:

    1. What happens to existing posts using the classic editor? Will they be automatically all converted to blocks?

    2. Will it have any other adverse effects on my posts/site?

    Thanks!

  • It shouldn’t have any adverse affects. Your existing posts will remain as is until you edit them. And with the way things are now, if you do edit a post, it will convert to classic blocks for you.

    Hi Supernovia,

After my previous comment I checked my site and I dont have the Classic Editor plugin at all, nor do I have any plugins that require the classic editor.

Any idea what else could be causing the issue?

  • Could you send a link to the site? We can check to see what it could be.

  • Thanks. I don’t see anything that stands out, so we’ll need to dig some more.

If you create a new post from your browser using the WordPress.com editor, i.e. My Site ->Site ->Posts ->Add New, does it load the editor for you in the same browser tab at https://wordpress.com/post/tariqk.com, or does it open a new browser tab at http://www.tariqk.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=post ?

If your browser also opens to a new tab in WP-Admin, it means the issue is with Jetpack, rather than the desktop app, or more specifically, another plugin that’s blocking the Jetpack/WordPress.com editor and forcing the WP-Admin editor instead. To figure out which one, you’ll need to disable all plugins except Jetpack. Then reactivate them one at a time until you find the one that’s forcing the WP-Admin editor.

    Steps:

    – I made a new post on the wordpress.com editor

    Results:

    – It opened in the same tab but at the following URL: https://tariqk.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=post

  • I noticed you have the ‘WPBakery Page Builder’ plugin installed on your site. You are using this to edit any content on your site? Because the page builder plugin is active on your site it may be causing a redirect to the ‘wp-admin’ URL.

To clarify, the WordPress app does not have the ability to load other editors, only the default WordPress.com block editor. If you are using a different editor on your site, it will cause the app to redirect you to a browser window (where you can edit in wp-admin)

If you deactivate WPBakery Page Builder are you then able to edit pages in the app using the default WordPress.com block editor?

    Thanks for the additional info!

    Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the input, if I disable WPBakery for a quick test, will it break anything on my site?

Will reenabling it after fix anything it breaks?

  • I found this from their support pages:
    https://visualcomposer.com/help/faq/plugin-deactivation/

I would second Jerry’s suspicion though that this is the issue.

You might try using a Health Check plugin to preview for yourself how the site would look with the plugin disabled.

Our post form wouldn’t recognize that. But you could use it to determine whether or how you want to proceed with a test.
