WordPress DNS records not working – site down

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi guys. I use a squarespace website with a wordpress domain name (pgdelaney.com). It’s been running fine without issue, but today squarespace can no longer find the relevant DNS records and the site is therefore down. I have checked the records page inside my wordpress account and everything seems to be still in place. I can’t understand the problem and the reason for my squarespace site being down – the site should in theory be up and running. Please can you help – this is a business website.
This seems to be a mapping issue but I haven’t changed anything and everything has been good since I first built my squarespace site.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Allowing a domain to expire
When you allow your domain expire, it then goes through a process that can take several months to complete described at https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/.

If you are in the grace period you will not have to agree to pay a redemption fee set by the domain name registrar that wordpress.COM staff cannot waive.

Otherwise, if you want Staff to try to recover the domain for you then you will have to agree to pay the redemption fee.

This thread is tagged this thread in the sidebar with modlook for Staff attention.

If you’re logged into the account that is associated with your expired domain, they will look up its status and get in touch with details.

If you are not logged in under the correct username account then clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies prior to logging into the associated account

Thank you – support is looking into this for me now. The domain is not expired and is in fact set to automatically renew, but for some reason the DNS records can no longer be found by my squarespace site – even though they are all still intact on my wordpress DNS records page.
This is really frustrating, I have no idea why it would decide to pack in today. It’s even more maddening that it can’t be put right immediately – my site has to stay broken until a registrar restores the domain correctly. Having spent all day Sunday working hard on a blog and highlighting the new post on all my social media sites, all new visitors will now see is a ‘site can’t be reached’ notification. That’s going to give a really bad impression and the possibility of gaining impetus is now gone and for a fledgling site/business like mine this is not good.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. But I am also happy to know Staff is assisting you with this.

Thank you. :-) I’m just very frustrated – I’m sure it will get resolved and I’ll ‘simmer down’ by tomorrow. Starting a new business is hard work, particularly where marketing is concerned and this is why I’m so vexed at the moment. It’s just a hiccup in the journey – hopefully the last ;-)
    Kind regards,
    Pete.

  • Hi @pgdelaney, yeah – looks like my colleague has already reached out to the registrar about that. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear back.

Thank you all! Fab new to wake up to! Everything indeed looks to be fine. I’m unsure as to whether this was a clerical error of some kind (a one-off mistake and therefore highly unlikely to happen again) or if there’s a possibility that unknown technical issues could see this re-occur from time to time? I do need confidence in the system working 24/7 and would appreciate feedback on this.
I am massively appreciative for your efforts, thank you again,
    Pete.

  • From what we could tell, it looked like it started here:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/deleted-my-com-site-have-i-messed-up-big-time

We had to restore the domain, then it automatically got cancelled again somehow. I do think that was a clerical error either on their end or ours — not sure. Hopefully we won’t be uncancelling your domain too often, though, so I think you’ll be all set from here.

Thank you Supernovia that was kind of you get back to me so quickly – It’s clear, to me at least, that the problem lay behind the ‘automatically cancelled again somehow’.

I can only assume that the domain was originally not restored correctly? That there was some kind of error or omission? A technical or administrative error that could suddenly happen again ‘automatically’ or ‘somehow’ suggests this should be passed on to a relevant department for assessment – to mitigate this from happening again?

Otherwise it’s just a ‘fingers crossed’ approach that we are taking. Would it be better if I request that my domain name is transferred to Squarespace?

    Thank you for your help,

    Pete. :-)

I’ve looked back through the thread I posted a month ago and I suspect the ‘Domain Partner’ as mentioned by staff-zinnia could be an area to home in on? Sadly I’m not a ‘technical website expert’, I have no training and certainly don’t have heaps of knowledge (none is probably more accurate) I am ‘just a customer’ hence I make mistakes and that’s probably to be expected, which is why I come to you lovely folks. I feel a little uncomfortable with a ‘hope for the best’ approach though, I hope you understand.
If you can investigate it really would be helpful and put my mind at rest.
Thank you so much for your help,
    Pete.

  • @pgdelaney Yeah, we have done some digging on this end but it seems to just be a fluke. Are you going to work on transferring it?
