WordPress domain upgrade while maintaining SEO?
-
Hi all,
Would be very grateful for some help as I can’t find a clear answer anywhere. I’ve got some decent SEO for my .wordpress.com domain (primrosemossfreelance.wordpress.com). I want to upgrade to primrosemossfreelance.com through the Starter WordPress package but can’t find anything about how this will affect my SEO.
I don’t mind the existing name so much that I’m willing to tank my SEO to upgrade it. Will switching affect the SEO or not?
PS – I’m happy trying to troubleshoot a few bits and bobs to get the SEO right but I’m completely self-taught with no coding background.
Thank you!

Hey there!
In general, SEO is really more about your site’s content than it is about your domain name — so optimizations that surface your site in search results should still apply regardless of the domain in use.
Also, keep in mind that even once you add a domain such as primrosemossfreelance.com, the original address primrosemossfreelance.wordpress.com will still work and point visitors to your site! So even if search engines such as Google are still returning results for primrosemossfreelance.wordpress.com at first, those links would just redirect them to your new domain name anyway.
So, in short, there really shouldn’t be any negative SEO impact when adding a custom domain, and it will definitely improve your overall branding :)
