WordPress Domains
-
Okay so I have two questions about the domain services, here at WordPress, but I’ll try to keep them as brief as possible.
1. I recently upgraded to WordPress Premium. This gives you a free domain as advertised. I already have a domain registered through WordPress that will last another 6 months. Does this mean that I should of received some sort of discount on the $99.00 upgrade? I didn’t get one. Also what happens for the 6 month period? Can I control another domain (two domains) during the 6 months or did I just end up paying for my same domain twice.
2. I purchased WordPress Premium today… Feb. 22, 2015. Why will it be getting renewed on Jan. 10, 2016? That’s cutting me short a whole month. If this is a normal thing, after 12 years of being your customer, you will have successfully scammed a years worth of payments from me! That’s not right… I noticed you undercutting me a month with my previous domain so this isn’t something that doesn’t normally happen.
I’d like professional, constructive input on this. These are not complaints, just legitimate questions that I’d like to have answers too if I’m forking over my money for it.
Thanks,

Hi Kristopher,
The WordPress.com Premium package comes with a free domain credit. If you’d like it can be applied towards a renewal of your current domain, however it will result in your products always being offset by about 6 months; or alternatively you can register an additional new domain. It’s entirely up to you which you choose to do.
In regards to your other concern, we do not short you by a month. We only make our first renewal attempt a month early. Especially with domain items which can be lost entirely if the domain is not renewed promptly, it is in everyone’s best interest to ensure that things are renewed. When the renewal happens, 12 months are added on to the current amount of time remaining. The expiration date is not set to 12 months from renewal date, but rather 12 months are added on to the end.
Let me know what you decide to do with your domain! If you’d like to apply the domain credit to your current domain, I’ll have to do that for you, but it will only take a moment.

Thank you for the quick response.
I have a much better understanding of how things work now, so I can rest easy. I would indeed like to apply the domain credit to my current domain. That would make me happy. :-)

If it’s offset by 6 months does that mean I’d have to pay for the domain and premium every year? I don’t want to be charged over $99 a year for 1 domain.

You would only need to pay for the WordPress.com premium (assuming you decided to keep it). It would renew again in January of 2016, and your domain (which now is going to be renewed out until August of 2016, would then get renewed out until August of 2017). Always offset by 6 months, but you would only be paying for the WordPress.com Premium package.

Essentially, it’s just starting my premium now and the day I decide to cancel it and it runs out, I pick back up where I left off with 6 months of domain. Got it. Yes, renew my domain.
