WordPress extremely unresponsive and slow

  I am in the process of changing the layout of my travel blog, but my website has become extremely slow and unresponsive. However, it isn’t only my website it is WordPress in general- the dashboard/ when I try to edit/customise posts etc.

  I have cleared the cache/ checked the internet connection but nothing.
